New EV will launch Hyundai’s new EV brand
Comes with flat floor, footrests for charging naps
Hyundai has just revealed interior images of its upcoming Ioniq 5 EV. With that new look at the interior comes a launch date, letting us know that the electric car will make its debut on February 23rd.
There are two images of the interior of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV, but the only real difference between the two photos appears to be a console that moves forward with the seat. Hyundai calls that new console the “Universal Island” and says it is the centrepiece of the interior of the Ioniq 5. The automaker doesn’t explain how the “island” will work, especially for back seat passengers, but does give a few interesting facts. Like that driver and passenger can exit the car from either side thanks to that sliding console and a flat floor not blocking their path. Looking out our office window at curbside snowbanks makes that idea sound like a great one.
The Ioniq 5’s front seats will get leg rests that flip up so those occupants can relax while they’re waiting for a charge. All of the seats can be moved, which Hyundai says makes it easier for front-seat passengers to tend to kids or pets in the rear.
Hyundai has worked to make the car more sustainable and eco-conscious, including eco-processed leather that’s dyed and treated with plant extracts. Other soft-touch fabrics in the cabin come from fibres including sugar cane, wool, and material woven with fibers from recycled bottles. Other surfaces use a bio paint made from other plant oils.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5, a retro-styled compact EV that borrows some cues from the original Pony, will be the first in Hyundai’s new Ioniq EV brand. It’s expected to have a range greater than 500 km, and to be on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform that will underpin future Hyundai and Kia EVs.
