Nissan will be bringing its brand-new Nissan Frontier mid-size pickup to the market next year.
The new Nissan Frontier planned for 2020 will feature a new engine and a completely transformed exterior in order to better compete with a revitalized mid-sized pickup segment.
The new-generation Nissan Frontier will take on the likes of the Jeep Gladiator, Ford Ranger and 2020 Toyota Tacoma along with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. All these trucks are younger than the current Frontier which is from a time when mid-size trucks had decreased in popularity.
The Nissan Frontier as we know it dates back to 2005. Any model would struggle after not having been redesigned in over a decade, even more so when its competition is basically all brand-new models.
According to Automotive News, the 2021 Nissan Frontier will debut next year and will use the more modern Nissan Navara platform. A new V6 engine is planned as well as a completely new exterior and interior design. The V6 will be a 3.0-liter mill likely producing around 300 horsepower according to the report.
The current Nissan Frontier uses a 4.0-liter engine making 261 horsepower which is paired to a five-speed automatic gearbox. A 4.0-liter engine with a five-speed automatic? Ish. Those numbers are relics of the past and although the Frontier still works, it can stand a comparison to its recent competition.
At this point, Nissan had a few choices of what to do with its mid-sized pickup. It could pull the plug, make the Navara compatible for North America or redesign the Frontier using the Navara as inspiration. It looks like the last option will be chosen.
