Ampure Go Gen 2 Portable EV Charger Review: More Power Than Some Wall-Mounted Chargers

Commercial-grade portable Level 2 EV charger delivers fast, efficient, and weather-resistant charging for all North American EVs.

  • Delivers 32A charging at 240V, offering up to 40 km of EV range per charging hour.

  • Dual-voltage 120V/240V capability and 20-foot cable enable flexible indoor, outdoor, or mobile use.

  • Compatible with all North American EVs using SAE J1772 or NACS connectors, including Tesla models.

The Ampure Go Gen 2 is a portable Level 2 EV charger developed for home, commercial, and business use. This type of charger could lead many EV buyers and owners to reconsider purchasing a wall-mounted Level 2 charger, especially since no actual installation is required.

The charger’s basic specs alone sell it. With a 32-amp output, dual-voltage support, and connector compatibility across all electric vehicles sold in North America, this second-generation model is built to serve a range of charging needs while maintaining portability and durability.

Charging Performance

At 240 volts, the charger delivers up to 32 amps of current, translating to roughly 40 kilometres of range per hour. Though of the previous generation, my current Flo Home charger is no more capable than the Ampure Go Gen 2. With the sole exception of being able to monitor the Flo charger via an application, the cost of a home charger plus its installation is difficult to justify.

The Ampure’s dual-voltage capability (120V/240V) increases flexibility for users operating in different environments or infrastructure constraints. It is compatible with standard NEMA 14-50 outlets and supports lower-voltage grid cords for alternate setups. I’ve got a 240V plug near the garage door meaning I benefit from maximum performance when I plug in my own EV of the week’s test unit. I’ve made a habit of loading the Ampure in my 2025 Kia EV9’s frunk whenever I travel for more than a day.

Build Quality and Durability

The Gen 2 unit is highly rated for waterproofing, allowing it to be fully used in outdoor and extreme weather conditions. Though I use a temporary car shelter in winter, temperatures have regularly dropped below -15 degrees Celsius overnight, followed by strong thaws; however, our local Greater Montreal weather never affected the charger’s performance, no matter the EV’s make.

The device includes a 20-foot charging cable to improve usability, though I will say that other chargers have offered a 25-foot cable—sometimes, five feet can go a long way in making life easier. The charger meets UL safety certification and incorporates built-in ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection. Additional safeguards protect against overheating, over/undervoltage, and general electrical faults, so no matter what may be thrown at it, safety and security are assured.

Connector Options and Compatibility

Ampure offers the Gen 2 with two connector options: SAE J1772 and NACS (North American Charging Standard). These allow it to charge all significant electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids sold in Canada and the United States.

Tesla vehicles are, therefore, also compatible with the appropriate adapter. However, as the American automaker does not have a press fleet, I’ve not “tested” it. I have plugged the Ampure Go Gen 2 charger into my EV9, a BMW i4, and several other EVs without issue.

ENERGY STAR certification indicates that the unit is designed to operate efficiently, reducing energy use and operational costs. This can particularly benefit businesses that want to manage utility consumption or reduce their environmental footprint.

On this point, the only missing “link” is an application for operating it remotely. For most users, the convenience of coming home at the end of the day and plugging is so stress-free that no other type of control is really required.

Intended Use and Market Position

While technically suitable for home use, which I’ve enjoyed for the last few months, the Ampure Go Gen 2 is marketed primarily toward businesses offering public or semi-public EV charging. Its portable form allows for use in fleet applications, temporary installations, or mobile services where fixed infrastructure is unavailable or impractical.

The Ampure’s dual-voltage capability is a key element in its versatility. No matter where I go with my EV9, such as an Airbnb rental house during the summer holidays, I’ll be able to maximize all charging opportunities. With broad compatibility, rugged construction, and dual voltage 120V/240V capability, I know I’ll never be stranded.
