An Electric El Camino at the Detroit Auto Show

An electric Chevrolet El Camino converted by Lingenfelter is present at the Detroit Auto Show.

Among the few curiosities at the Detroit Auto Show, a popular model from the past, an El Camino (read eL Camino) joins the future with an electric conversion from tuner firm Lingenfelter.

A joint project

It was GM in November 2020 that had selected Lingenfelter as the first aftermarket company to develop the certified installer program for the GM eCrate Electric Connect and Cruise system. This 3rd generation El Camino was converted to all-electric power in the summer of 2021, and has since accumulated hundreds of test miles to validate the electric motor swap concept.

66 kWh battery

Under the front hood is an electric motor with a 66-kWh battery, air suspension and 19-inch wheels with oversized brakes. The battery develops about 200 horsepower a DC to AC power inverter, DC to DC power converter, controllers, wiring harnesses and a water pump. This vehicle that served as a rolling laboratory could have a sequel. The GM Concept Electric Connect and Cruise eCrate Package could be used for those who want to convert their old GM vehicle to electric.
