An Update can Add Charging Speed and Range to Older Porsche Taycan Models

Porsche is making a software update available to every owner of 2020 to 2022 Taycan models.

  • The 2020 to 2022 models can receive the same software as the 2023 version

  • This adds around 50 kilometres of range WLTP and makes charging faster

  • Infotainment and driver assistance technologies are also enhanced

Porsche is releasing an update to older Taycan models that can bring the 2020 to 2022 models in line with the improved 2023 version in terms of range, charging speed, and connectivity.

This software update makes the electric drivetrain more efficient by allowing the front motor to disconnect and be de-energized when not in use on the all-wheel drive versions.

This reduces the mechanical drag of the powertrain while also limiting the power usage when traction is sufficient to drive in rear-wheel drive only.

In addition, the update also adds the capability to coast without using any power and better management of the energy regeneration system that can be used to slow down the vehicle.

All of these improvements can add up to give about 50 kilometres of additional range according to the WLTP cycle.

Furthermore, the update makes fast charging quicker by implementing better battery temperature management, which can reduce the time needed to charge, especially in cold weather.

This improvement in the battery’s temperature management also allows using a level 3 charging station more often without the risk of damaging the battery and it can also allow charging outside of the usual 20% to 80% window. These changes had already been implemented on the 2022 Taycans, so only owners of the 2020 and 2021 models will see an improvement on that front.

The changes are not limited to the powertrain either, since the infotainment system will receive its share of modifications. Indeed, the start screen will have a new design and the whole system will be made easier to use.

In 2020 and 2021 models, the Spotify app and the wireless Android Auto will be added while the voice commands are made more intuitive. 2021 Taycans with the available head-up display will also see their navigation map enhanced.

Driver assistance systems will also be optimized, including the park assist system that will now provide more accurate sensor readings and the ability to park in smaller spaces than before.

This update is free to all 2020 to 2022 Taycan owners but Porsche says it can only be performed by a dealership and not via the over-the-air capability, which should also be enhanced.
