Problems continue to pile up for GM’s full-size vehicles. After a series of recalls involving the 6.2-litre V8, the 10-speed automatic transmission is once again under scrutiny, with a new recall affecting additional models — including some that were already recalled.

GM appears to be losing its grip on its 10-speed transmission. Issues and recalls continue to accumulate, and the latest development involves an expansion of an existing recall. Initially, the recall applied only to models equipped with the Duramax turbodiesel powertrain, specifically the 3.0-litre inline-six. This time, the scope has been widened to include the 2022 model year with other engines, namely the 5.3-litre and 6.2-litre V8s.
2022 Chevrolet TahoeThe affected models are diverse but, as usual, limited to the same group of large SUVs: Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the luxury Cadillac Escalade in both standard and extended wheelbase configurations. Recall N252536750 covers 2,071 units from the 2022 model year in Canada, while the global total reaches 43,732 vehicles. While the number may seem relatively limited, it’s important to note that only versions equipped with Electronic Transmission Range Selection (ETRS) technology and four-wheel-drive models with an electronically controlled transfer case are impacted. In other words, the most highly equipped versions are the ones affected.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the transmission control valve body could wear and lose pressure. If this happens, the transmission could shift harshly and cause the wheels to lock up.
Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Safety Risk: Wheels that lock suddenly could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the transmission control module software to detect excess wear in advance of a wheel lock up. If detected, a service engine light would turn on, a message would display in the instrument panel and the vehicle would be limited to fifth gear.
