Audi introduced a new electric vehicle under a standalone China-exclusive brand, AUDI, debuting with the E5 Sportback at Auto Shanghai 2025 back in April. Within 30 minutes of opening pre-orders in Shenzhen on Wednesday, AUDI received over 10,000 orders for the vehicle. Proof that affordable premium vehicles will sell.

Developed in partnership with SAIC, the AUDI brand omits Audi’s signature Four Rings and operates as a separate identity tailored to China. Built at SAIC-Volkswagen’s Anting facility in Shanghai, the E5 Sportback is the first model based on the Advanced Digitized Platform, a jointly developed architecture designed to support next-generation electric vehicles with high levels of digital integration and connectivity.
The E5 Sportback is offered in four variants, with output ranging from 220 to 579 kilowatts (295 to 776 hp). The top-tier dual-motor version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, and offers a driving range of up to 770 kilometres (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, or CLTC) or 541 km EPA. Entry-level models pair a 76-kWh battery with a single rear-mounted motor and deliver an estimated 618-kilometre range (434 km EPA).

Despite the accessible pricing, the vehicle incorporates features such as adaptive air suspension with Continuous Damping Control, rear-wheel steering, 800-volt architecture for ultra-fast charging, and a LiDAR-based driver assistance system. Audi, pardon, AUDI, could not build E5 Sportbacks fast enough to supply demand in Canada and the U.S. at this price.
Inside, the E5 features a pillar-to-pillar 27-inch 4K panoramic display, digital side mirrors, and an AI-powered voice and gesture-controlled assistant. The AUDI OS operating system is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 chip and supports over-the-air updates and seamless integration with China’s app ecosystem.

The vehicle’s lighting system includes Matrix LED headlights and over 1,000 individual light units for customizable displays.
Following the E5, two additional China-exclusive AUDI models are scheduled for launch in 2026 and 2027. The creation of “AUDI” shows how serious the German automaker is about China, with a dedicated product initiative with a focus on localized design and production. By leveraging joint development with SAIC and utilizing a supply chain rooted in China’s NEV sector, AUDI aims to establish a new foothold in a rapidly evolving market.
AUDI’s early order volume suggests strong initial interest, though the brand will face competition in a crowded EV segment dominated by domestic automakers, even at this price point.
