Audi will be taking on Tesla with a new compact luxury e-tron EV planned for 2023.
Audi is planning a new e-tron electric vehicle for every segment. The latest report is a compact luxury e-tron to take on the Tesla Model 3.
About the same size as an Audi A4, the new e-tron model would likely use many of the same styling cues as the Audi e-tron GT unveiled in Los Angeles back in November.
The GT will take on the Tesla Model S while this smaller e-tron would battle the Model 3 as well as the BMW i4 and whatever Mercedes-Benz has planned with its EQ lineup.
Audi is pushing its e-tron lineup hard right now. The e-tron Quattro is launching in June and the smaller Q4 e-tron debuted in Geneva. Audi says it wants a total of 12 all-electric models by 2025 with the Q4 e-tron planned for 2021 and the e-tron GT launching sometime in 2020.
No word yet on what electric motor would power the A4-sized compact e-tron sedan, but we would imagine it would based on the Q4 e-tron’s powertrain. The latter delivers 450 kilometers of range thanks to an 82-kWh battery.
This new EV sedan will be built on a shared EV platform called PPE, or Premium Platform Electric. Designed jointly with Porsche, with platform covers B to D segment vehicles.
If you’re into electric vehicles, the next few years will prove very, very exciting. Stay tuned.
