Audi’s Q4 e-tron, is responsible in large part for the German automaker’s EV growth. In fact, it has significantly propelled the brand’s electric delivery numbers by 51.2% in the first half of 2023. For the 2024 model year, a series of updates are being introduced and should maintain and likely increase its take rate.
These upgrades, set to be available from September 26 in Europe, comprise a fine-tuned suspension, an improved driving experience, distinctive acoustics, and an advanced set of standard equipment. We expect that these same improvements should be introduced in North America at a later date.
Battery & Charging
Central to the Q4 e-tron is the battery that provides 77 kWh of net energy (82 kWh gross) Innovations in cell chemistry have refined the DC charging capability, allowing a 10-80% charge in approximately 28 minutes under optimal conditions. quattro models now peak at a DC charging capacity of 175 kW, while the rear-wheel drive versions can reach up to 135 kW. Smart charging systems, such as the e-tron route planner, prioritize high-performance HPC stations, adjusting battery conditions to maximize charging efficiency.
Performance & Efficiency
With a new permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM) on the rear axle, all Q4 e-tron models, irrespective of their drive type, now boast better efficiency and increased power. For instance, the Audi Q4 Sportback 45 e-tron achieves a commendable range of up to 562 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. The new electric motor’s thermal management has been optimized to ensure increased efficiency, utilizing a strategic oil distribution system and a cooling jacket.
Suspension & Handling
With a re-tuned suspension, the Q4 e-tron’s driving experience promises more stability, comfort, and agility. Every suspension variant has been tailored to ensure an ideal balance between handling and comfort, along with sharper steering response. The sport suspension sets the body 15 millimeters lower, resulting in a sportier drive.
Advanced Driver Assistance
Optional features in the 2024 update include assisted lane changes, available with adaptive cruise assist, aiding in lane transitions at speeds exceeding 90 km/h. The innovative system supports the driver, providing visual prompts and ensuring the highest possible safety levels.
Equipment Enhancements
Standard equipment now incorporates Audi MMI navigation plus, Audi connect Navigation & Infotainment, and the digital 10.25-inch instrument panel Audi virtual cockpit. The trunk’s liftgate has been equipped with an electric motor, responding to foot gestures, and heated front seats are standard. A new Edition S line adds further customization options.
Distinctive Sound
The 2024 update introduces an optional “character sound”, giving the Q4 e-tron a unique acoustic identity. This digitally-generated sound, varying with speed and load, resonates both inside and outside the vehicle, ensuring that the vehicle can be heard at low speeds.
Production Expansion
Due to the model’s high demand, production will expand to Audi’s Brussels site by year-end. This carbon-neutral facility has been responsible for producing Audi’s electric models since 2018. As part of a broader vision, Audi is moving towards electrifying its entire production line by the decade’s close, targeting net carbon-neutral production by 2025.
