M5 Touring gets electrification
Expect near 700 hp from PHEV M
At the top of this year’s naughty list? BMW. The Bavarians have just posted a video showing a new M5 Touring confirming that the next M5 will get electrified power. So why naughty? Because we know we won’t be getting it, at least not in wagon form.
The video is called The M List. Well, The ///M List, because you have to stick with corporate branding.
Santa Claus (should that be Weihnachtsmann?) is checking his lists and eating some cookies when he opens a new letter. This one shows the M list (sorry, ///M List).
In Santa’s garage is a well-wrapped BMW M5 Touring. It’s the high-performance wagon version of the upcoming M5 sedan. It looks like the new 5, of course, but this one will be faster. Much faster.
The real tease comes at the end. “The Ultimate Electrified M Power.”
What does that mean?
The outgoing BMW M5 maxes out at 626 hp from its 4.4L twin-turbo V8. We doubt the M5 will lose that V8, but how much power could it gain?
Look to the BMW XM for that. The exclusively PHEV XM adds an electric motor to its 4.4L V8 to make a total of 738 hp in Label Red form.
The Label Red XM is meant to be the M flagship, so don’t expect the M5 to top it. But do expect the M5’s power numbers to be extremely close. Possibly even topping the 700 mark.
