The BMW i Hydrogen NEXT presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show previews the next-generation X5.
BMW took the stage at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show and shared part of their future. The cars on stage, the cars unveiled, the speech, the carmaker is, to quote BMW AG’s CEO “right at the forefront of electro-mobility.”
The latest concept unveiled in BMW’s future zero-emission mobility development is the i Hydrogen NEXT. The concept showcases a glimpse of the German manufacturer’s hydrogen fuel cell electric drive systems. Starting in 2022, BMW wants to present their latest fuel cell system in a series of vehicles based of the current-generations BMW X5.
“We expect to see an increase in demand for this technology in the second half of the next decade. And we will be ready with an offer for our customers, should they request it,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
BMW could have fuel cell vehicles in its lineup as early as 2025, but it will depend on “market requirements and overall conditions” they said.
The concept’s exterior showcases some clear BMW i model design patterns. First off, the Mineral White body features BMW i Blue patterning all over it. Second, even the wheels get the blue treatment. Lastly, the BMW i Blue diffuser in the rear and the lack of exhaust tailpipes helps seal the deal.
