BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase: Designed for Asia and hard not to wish for it here

With a wheelbase extended by 108 mm, the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase embodies the brand’s “In China, for China” vision, prioritizing rear-seat space, comfort, and next-generation electric technology designed to resonate well beyond the Middle Kingdom.

  • Wheelbase extended by 108 mm to maximize rear-seat space and passenger comfort
  • Development tailored specifically for China, with targeted availability across key Asian markets
  • Neue Klasse technologies set to influence BMW’s global lineup

A unique wheelbase for a market with very specific expectations

BMW is currently fine-tuning a long-wheelbase version of its upcoming electric iX3, a strategic model developed first and foremost to meet the precise expectations of Asian markets, with China clearly at the centre of that strategy.

Developed specifically for Chinese customers, the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase will become the first long-wheelbase electric SUV built on the Neue Klasse architecture. This technical choice is far from incidental: in China and across much of Asia, rear-seat space remains a decisive purchasing factor in the premium vehicle segment.

With an additional 108 millimetres between the axles, BMW promises a noticeable improvement in interior roominess, without compromising the proportions or driving character that define the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicles. The objective is clear: deliver greater comfort—particularly for rear passengers—while maintaining the balanced, dynamic feel that is core to BMW’s DNA.

Chassis tuning adapted to Asian driving realities

Beyond the simple wheelbase extension, the iX3 Long Wheelbase benefits from chassis and suspension tuning developed specifically for China. This calibration targets a refined balance between ride comfort, stability, and versatility, whether navigating dense urban environments or covering long highway distances.

BMW emphasizes that this stretched configuration does not detract from agility or steering precision. The long-wheelbase layout was integrated from the earliest development stages, rather than added as an afterthought, ensuring the vehicle retains its overall coherence and dynamic integrity.

Neue Klasse technologies and next-generation electrification

The iX3 Long Wheelbase is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture and features BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. This includes new cylindrical battery cells and the in-house-developed BMW Energy Master energy management system.

This technological foundation is expected to deliver a combined range exceeding 900 kilometres under the CLTC cycle (632 km according to the EPA cycle), a highly competitive figure in China’s premium electric vehicle market. Dynamic performance is further enhanced by the new central “Heart of Joy” control unit, which coordinates power delivery, braking, energy recuperation, and steering in real time to ensure smooth, natural, and predictable responses.

An Asian strategy with global implications

Presented as a product “designed in China, for China, with China,” the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase nonetheless extends beyond a purely regional role. Following its global debut, expected at the Beijing Auto Show in 2026, the model is slated to go on sale in China in the second half of the year, before being introduced in select Asian markets including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.

While this long-wheelbase configuration is not planned for Canada, it would arguably represent a more affordable alternative for families seeking increased rear-seat space without stepping up to a larger vehicle such as the upcoming iX5.
