BMW iX5 Now Targets 724 km of Range Ahead of 2027 Launch

BMW has raised its range estimate for the electric X5, although the official EPA rating is still pending.

  • The BMW iX5 60 xDrive now targets approximately 724 km of EPA range, up from 700 km.

  • Its 144-kWh battery is the largest fitted to a BMW production vehicle, according to InsideEVs.

  • BMW quotes a 10–80% charging time of 22 minutes, with sales scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

BMW is raising its range target for the upcoming iX5 60 xDrive. According to InsideEVs, company representatives now expect the electric SUV to achieve an EPA rating of 450 miles, or approximately 724 kilometres.

That is about 24 kilometres more than the 435-mile target BMW previously announced. The revised figure remains an estimate, with the official EPA rating expected in the coming weeks.

The update was shared during the launch of the new X5 lineup in California. BMW luxury vehicle product manager John Kelly pointed to the company’s sixth-generation battery technology as a key part of the electric SUV’s expected range.

BMW’s goal is to give drivers more flexibility in everyday use. According to X5 project head Michael Ahlers, the company identified roughly 644 kilometres as the point at which customers would worry less about range. Targeting 724 kilometres provides an extra margin for higher speeds and air conditioning use.

That does not mean drivers should expect 724 kilometres in every situation. Speed, temperature and climate-control use will affect actual range, and the estimate is not a confirmed Canadian rating.

A substantial battery supports that target. The iX5 uses a 144-kWh pack, described by InsideEVs as the largest ever installed in a production BMW. Its cylindrical cells follow the same basic arrangement used in the iX3 and i3, but are 25 millimetres taller to increase capacity.

Charging speed is another important part of the package, particularly with a battery this large. BMW quotes peak charging power of 460 kW and a 10–80% charging time of 22 minutes. Those are manufacturer figures, and actual charging performance will depend on conditions and the equipment available.

The iX5 is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2027. The report does not establish Canadian pricing or delivery timing, but the higher range target gives buyers another reason to watch BMW’s first battery-electric X5.
