BMW’s New Door Lock Trick Targets a Cyclist’s Worst Nightmare

• Exit Warning now actively delays door opening to prevent dooring accidents

BMW will offer an expanded portfolio of active safety assistance systems as standard across multiple model series for the first time, the automaker announced on August 27, 2026. The rollout begins with the new BMW iX3, the first Neue Klasse production model to carry the technology, with the BMW i3, X5 and 7 Series to follow.

“The broad rollout of our new active safety functions as standard is based on our ‘Smart, Symbiotic, Safe’ philosophy,” said Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience Development at the BMW Group. “At BMW, active safety functions operate as quiet, intelligent companions in the background, discreet yet highly effective when it matters most in critical situations.”

The most notable addition is an enhanced Exit Warning function with active door opening delay. Side radars continuously monitor traffic around the parked vehicle. If the system detects an approaching cyclist, vehicle or other road user, the electronic door lock delays the door from opening until the danger has passed.

Anyone who has cycled through a city core knows why this matters. Dooring accidents happen when a parked car’s door swings unexpectedly into the traffic lane. According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), 392 dooring accidents occurred in Berlin alone in 2024, just under 8% of all bicycle accidents in the city.

Fleet data: 243,977 collision interventions in one month

BMW backs the expansion with numbers from 1.3 million connected vehicles whose owners consented to data collection. In a single month, the analyzed European fleet covered 1.6 billion kilometres. Drivers received roughly 8 million visual and acoustic collision alerts. In 243,977 cases, active steering and braking interventions helped prevent a potential collision.

Symbiotic Drive reads turn signals, steering inputs and shoulder checks

Here’s where BMW’s approach differs from the usual driver-assistance playbook. BMW Symbiotic Drive interprets driver intent through steering inputs and line of sight. Indicators include activating the turn signal, making an active steering input or performing a shoulder check.

The practical result: the Lane Keeping Assistant only warns or intervenes when the vehicle detects an unintended lane departure or an imminent collision. Deliberate manoeuvres go uninterrupted, provided there is no foreseeable collision risk.

The expanded suite also includes:

• Emergency steering intervention: automatically steers around an obstacle within the vehicle’s own lane and counters side-impact risks
• Emergency Brake Assistant: adds evasive steering support and can now react to animals and wildlife crossings
• Road Priority Warning: displays red lights, stop signs, yield signs, no-entry signs and now crosswalk warnings in the driver’s field of view
• Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop: brings the vehicle to a controlled stop, activates the hazard lights and triggers an eCall if the driver camera detects the driver is unfit to drive
• Start monitoring: brakes the vehicle if it detects an obstacle less than one metre away at speeds up to 2 km/h combined with rapid accelerator depression

New computer runs on 20 times the processing power

All functions run on a central water-cooled computer BMW calls the “Superbrain of Automated Driving,” with approximately 20 times the computing power of the previous system. The new iX3 also earned five stars in Euro NCAP testing under protocols revised in 2026.
