BMW plans to end i4 production next year after launching the new i3.

BMW will end i4 production next year, closing out one of the brand’s earliest higher-volume battery-electric passenger cars as the newly revealed i3 moves into the same part of the line-up.
The i4 entered the market in 2021 and, together with the iX, helped mark BMW’s first major wave of volume EV launches. It was positioned as an electric alternative in the compact premium sedan space and remained one of the company’s better-known and most-appreciated electric offerings through its lifecycle.

According to reports, the i4’s exit is tied to the arrival of the new i3, which is similar in size but far more advanced. The i4 is currently produced at BMW’s Munich plant, where i3 production is set to begin.
BMW Group product executive Jochen Goller said the overlap and replacement pattern follows the company’s normal product cadence, with older models winding down as new ones increase volume. He said that the transition had already been incorporated into BMW’s planning.
The outgoing i4 leaves with a meaningful sales record. In the U.S. and Canada, sales were quite strong even in 2025 despite a marked downturn in the EV take rate. Versions like the xDrive40, for just over $70,000 in Canada, provided meaningful performance thanks to 396 horsepower and an estimated 462 km range.

Its replacement arrives with a clear technical advantage. BMW offers the i3 with an 800-volt architecture and DC fast-charging capability of up to 400 kW. The i3 50 xDrive is reported at 469 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque, with an expected EPA range in excess of 700 km.
BMW also signalled that the current i4 nameplate’s departure may not permanently signify the end of an electric 4 Series-shaped offering from the range. The company has previously indicated that a next-generation 4 Series is under development as a more style-focused and dynamic counterpart to the 3 Series.
