BMW Revamps 1 Series with Dynamic Redesign, Hybrid Powertrains

Introducing the fourth generation with striking design, hybrid engines, and cutting-edge tech

  • BMW’s new 1 Series debuts with dynamic design, hybrid engines, and improved chassis for sportier performance.

  • Features include aggressive styling, sustainable interior, advanced tech, and various engine options up to 300hp.

  • Enhanced dynamics and standard driver aids, targeting Europe and Japan, but not available in Canada.

BMW has taken the wraps off the fourth generation of its compact 1 Series model, boasting a dynamic new design, revised engine lineup with mild-hybrid technology, and improved chassis dynamics. Set for market launch in Europe in October 2024, the all-new 1 Series aims to sharpen its profile as the sportiest offering in the premium compact segment.

Aggressive Exterior Styling

The new 1 Series features typical BMW proportions with a long hood, set-back passenger compartment, and flowing roofline. While marginally larger than its predecessor, the new model sports a strikingly flat front end with an innovative vertical/diagonal bar radiator grille. Standard LED headlights incorporate vertical daytime running light elements.

From the side, the wedge shape and tapered window graphics lend a dynamic profile, enhanced by a long roof spoiler and side air deflectors. At the rear, vertical reflectors and a diffuser-style insert amplify the potent appearance. A contrasting black roof option further accentuates the sporty character.

Efficient Yet Powerful Engines

Under the hood, the 1 Series debuts BMW’s latest modular engine generation, all paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology for improved efficiency. The 120 gets a 170hp 3-cylinder turbo, the 120d a 163hp 4-cylinder diesel, and the 118d a 150hp 4-cylinder diesel – all mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Heading the range is the M135 xDrive, packing a 300hp 4-cylinder turbo, Adaptive M suspension, sport steering and intelligent AWD. It hits 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Premium Interior and Tech

Inside, the new 1 Series premiers BMW’s leather-free interior design across all models, focusing on sustainable materials and premium ambience. Newly designed seats offer increased comfort and optional massage functions.

The BMW Curved Display integrates 10.25″ and 10.7″ digital screens, complemented by BMW’s latest iDrive 9 system with smartphone-style QuickSelect menus and remote update capability. BMW Digital Premium unlocks extra connected features as well.

Chassis Upgrades and Driver Aids

Benefiting from increased body rigidity, fine-tuned kinematics and retuned shocks/anti-roll bars, the 1 Series promises sharper dynamics and steering feel. Options include Adaptive M Sport suspension, larger wheels up to 19 inches, and an M Sport brake system.

A full suite of driver aids comes standard, from frontal collision warning to parking assistants. Higher trims add Lane Keep Assist, Automatic Speed Limit Assist and even Smartphone Parking control.

While production will continue at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany, key target markets for the new 1 Series model are the domestic market as well as other European countries and Japan. Sadly, the new model will not be offered in Canada.
