BMW To Discontinue the iX for the North American Market Later this Year

  • The iX will exit production in October 2026 for the Canadian market and at an undisclosed date for the U.S. market.

  • The electric SUV is expected to remain on sale in other markets.

  • BMW will focus on its Neue Klasse family of EVs, including an upcoming iX5 that will take the place of the current iX in the lineup.

After five model years, the BMW iX will be retired at the end of the 2026 model year for the Canadian and American markets.

Indeed, the German automaker has decided to discontinue its first electric SUV in order to make some room for its new generation of Neue Klasse electric vehicles, including an upcoming mid-sized iX5 that has yet to be unveiled.

Given the iX’s size and pricing, an iX5 should be a pretty direct replacement in the automaker’s lineup.

While BMW USA didn’t announce an official end date for the iX, Jean-François Taylor from BMW Canada confirmed to us that production for the Canadian market will continue until the end of the 2026 model year in October, but there won’t be a 2027 model.

It is likely that the same will be true for the U.S. market, but we can’t know for sure as global production of the iX is set to continue.

Indeed, this decision to stop iX sales in anticipation of the arrival of Neue Klasse EVs only applies to North America. Other global markets will therefore get the 2027 model year of the brand’s first electric SUV.

This makes the automaker’s decision to refresh the iX only a few months ago easier to understand than if production were to stop completely for all markets.

Until then, Canadian buyers will still be able to get their hands on a new 2026 iX, which comes in xDrive45, xDrive 60, and M70 xDrive trim levels, priced from $89,900, $94,900, and $129,900, respectively.

Depending on the powertrain and the wheel and tire package, official range figures for the iX go from 449 km to 586 km, according to Natural Resources Canada.

As a comparison, the new BMW iX3, which should arrive in Canada right as the iX exits production for our market, is expected to offer up to 650 kilometres of range on a charge, significantly more than any other BMW EV that came before.
