BMW Trademarks iM3 Name for Electric M3

BMW gets electric M car name

  • iM3 trademark filings hint at electric sports sedan

  • BMW electric models use i branding

It looks like the first electric BMW M3 will happen and it will be called the iM3. At least that’s the name the company has applied for a trademark to get.

While the idea of an electric M3 might be a horror to some, it’s almost an inevitability. That’s why BMW has applied for the iM3 trademark with the EU and German Patent and Trade Mark offices (via CarBuzz).

While the iM3 probably won’t arrive for a few years, it will probably live alongside the gas engine model at least for a few years. BMW’s product boss, Frank Weber, has said before that “there will be co-existence of the solution in the market, which is necessary.”

If you’re worried about the M3 losing its charm when it becomes electric, you shouldn’t be. The i4 is one of the best versions of the 4 Series, so we have little doubt BMW will be able to maintain the magic. You might lose some noise, but there’s always that Hans Zimmer soundtrack instead.

Plus BMW has said that it won’t make an electric M3 until it will be better than the current car. So there’s a high bar for BMW’s M group to jump to get the iM3 where it needs to be. With other electric driver’s cars on the market including the Porsche Taycan, BMW’s M division M-ight need to hurry up its development.
