Buick Shifts Envision’s Production From China to the United States to Offset Tariffs

U.S. tariff pressure is beginning to “pay off” in terms of job creation within the American automotive industry. General Motors has announced that Buick will relocate production of the Envision from China to Kansas starting in 2028.

Built in China, the Envision Is Hit Hard by Tariffs

The Model Will Be Assembled Alongside the Chevrolet Equinox in Kansas

The Envision Remains One of Buick’s Best-Selling Models

Buick is one of GM’s most successful divisions in China. The brand enjoys strong sales there, and GM even offers a range of models exclusive to the Chinese market. While GM strategically concentrated a portion of its global production in China, tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration have triggered an unexpected price increase for one specific model: the Envision.

The Envision has been exclusively assembled in China since the launch of its first generation in 2014, though it only arrived in North America in 2016. The current generation debuted for the 2021 model year. Despite being a core product in Buick’s lineup, rising tariffs have significantly increased its U.S. pricing.

As an example, the Envision’s price rose by approximately $4,500. That increase is substantial, considering the 2024 Preferred base model started at $37,295. For 2026, the same version is priced at $41,000, plus destination and delivery charges—a difference of more than $3,700. In Canada, the Envision now starts at $48,325, including freight and PDI.

U.S. Sales Impact

In the United States, Buick sold 198,155 vehicles in 2025. Of that total, 41,924 units were Envisions, making it the brand’s third-best-selling model behind the subcompact Encore GX and Envista. While the Envision remains popular, it must stay positioned as an “affordable” option. The price increase has clearly affected demand, with Envision sales declining by 11.4% in 2025.

GM’s Response

It comes as no surprise that the U.S. administration is using tariffs as leverage to push automakers to bring production back to American soil. GM has clearly received the message. To secure the future of the Envision, the automaker will move its production to the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas.

Production will begin in 2028, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox. GM stated:
“This decision further strengthens GM’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supports U.S. jobs, building on $5.5 billion in new investments announced across our U.S. manufacturing sites over the past year.”

Will the Envision Become a Twin of the Equinox and Terrain?

By 2028, the Envision will be ready for a full generational redesign. With production moving alongside the Chevrolet Equinox, it’s reasonable to assume GM could turn the Envision into a technical twin of its platform-mates. This would not be unprecedented, as GM already applies this strategy with the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, which are closely related.

The Envision could easily join this group. Doing so would simplify manufacturing processes and, most importantly, significantly reduce development and engineering costs—an increasingly critical factor in today’s tariff-driven automotive landscape.
