BYD is Launching a “New Energy” Midsize pickup truck soon

  • There are still no plans for North America.

  • BYD is aiming at other markets for now with this upcoming truck.

Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) has been in the news quite a bit in recent months, not least because it is stepping onto Tesla‘s shoes with its extensive range of electrified vehicles. It should be remembered that BYD, unlike the division co-founded by Elon Musk, also markets hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in addition to its 100% EVs.

However, BYD doesn’t have a pickup truck in its line-up, and that’s where it gets interesting, as the Chinese giant is preparing to launch its own in the coming months. In fact, BYD has also unveiled these photos of a mid-size pickup intended to give Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max a run for their money, to name but a few.

The images show a pickup with a crew cab, a trend already popular globally. We can also see that, unlike the Tesla Cybertruck, the truck adopts a more conventional stance. The silhouette of this pimped-out midsize truck is much closer to what the future truck’s avowed competitors are already offering.

For the moment, details on the type of powertrain envisaged by BYD are limited, but the automaker’s strategists have at least stated that the pickup in question would be the first truck to feature “new energy”.

It would be surprising if BYD were to confirm its entry into the North American market at the time of writing, despite the addition of a vehicle that is likely to appeal to audiences north of the Mexico-US border. For now, the Chinese giant is capitalizing on other markets such as Australia, South America, and Asia, in addition to dominating its local market with a 33% share of the electric car market in 2023.

It is interesting, however, that BYD is entering the truck race, whether it is for North America or not.
