Cadillac Prepares 2027 XT5 Plug-In Hybrid with Global Market in View

Plug-in hybrid variant of Cadillac’s popular midsize SUV could attract more buyers to GM’s luxury brand

  • UPDATE: A GM Canada spokesperson has reached out to us with a comment on the upcoming new Cadillac XT5.

  • 2027 Cadillac XT5 PHEV under development by GM teams in China, Detroit, and Seoul.

  • Model may use True Dragon Pro powertrain with 147 km electric range, 1,123+ km total range.

  • No confirmation on North American launch; Chinese debut and production expected first.

“We are pleased to announce the Cadillac XT5, an important part of our global portfolio, will continue with a next-generation gas-powered model, launching in 2027. As Cadillac evolves, we will continue to make necessary adjustments to our portfolio to meet customer demand.

Additional details about the next-generation XT5 and features will be shared at a later date.”

General Motors is developing a plug-in hybrid version of the 2027 Cadillac XT5, with sources indicating the new model could be positioned as a global offering. Cadillac is doing well in North America with its growing range of impressive EVs. The addition of a PHEV derivative could further bolster the automaker’s success.

The upcoming XT5 PHEV is currently under development in China by a team led by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai, working in collaboration with international engineers from Detroit and Seoul. The vehicle will serve as an electrified variant of Cadillac’s midsize luxury crossover, continuing its role in the brand’s key volume markets.

The PHEV version is expected to share its body design with the second-generation XT5 currently sold in China, which has also been confirmed for the North American market. Alongside the new powertrain, the model will integrate GM’s semi-autonomous driving systems and other updated vehicle technologies.

Sources suggest the XT5 PHEV may use the “True Dragon Pro” powertrain, recently introduced by SAIC-GM in the Buick Electra E7. The system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and a high-capacity battery, offering an estimated electric-only range of 210 kilometres (147 km EPA) and a combined range of more than 1,600 kilometres (1,123 km EPA) under the CLTC test cycle.

Road testing of the 2027 XT5 PHEV is underway in China, where the model is expected to debut and enter production for the local market. It remains unclear whether General Motors will offer the plug-in hybrid variant in the United States or Canada, but it would certainly be well-received.

Previous statements from 2024 indicated Cadillac did not plan to sell PHEVs in North America, although the company’s strategy may have shifted. At the very least, the buying public’s desire for EVs has…

The North American version of the XT5 is expected to be unveiled later this year.
