Chrysler has introduced the Halcyon Concept, showcasing the storied brand’s direction towards sustainable mobility and advanced technology. The name Halcyon is meant to embody the essence of what they term “Harmony in Motion.” According to Chris Feuell, Chrysler brand CEO – Stellantis, it also refers to a memory of happiness, of joy and purity, design. If anything, it certainly is beautiful.
This unveiling is aligned with the broader Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 plan where the automaker will shift towards more sustainable and efficient propulsion systems as the Halcyon is fully electric. Built on the STLA Large Platform, the Halcyon Concept incorporates the STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive technologies, which together create seamless connectivity and autonomous driving capabilities. The vehicle’s design is a balance of aerodynamics and aesthetics, featuring a low profile and a distinctive front air blade aerodynamic pass-through. The front windshield flows down into the pass-through, creating a perfectly smooth surface. This design feature not only enhances its performance but also its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) range.
One of the most striking features of the Halcyon Concept is its butterfly-hinged canopy and side doors, which provide an unparalleled sense of openness and accessibility. The use of 95 % sustainable interior materials, including innovative uses of recycled music CDs for the Chrysler Wing logos, is a novel approach that underlines Chrysler’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Halcyon Concept’s interior is a realm of futuristic luxury, where technology and comfort come together. The vehicle boasts advanced features such as the Intelligent Cabin Comfort, which utilizes AI to optimize the vehicle’s environment, and a biometric identification system that personalizes the welcome and entry experience. The vehicle’s ability to adapt to its occupants’ preferences extends to cymatics, where sounds and vibrations are visually represented to enhance the driving mood.
Autonomous driving takes a front seat in the Halcyon Concept with the inclusion of STLA AutoDrive technology, allowing for Level 4 autonomous experiences. This is complemented by dynamic driving modes that can be activated through voice recognition, offering a tailored driving experience.
Perhaps one of the most forward-thinking aspects of the Halcyon Concept is its embrace of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) technology, enabling the vehicle to recharge wirelessly as it drives, promising an era of unlimited range for electric vehicles. This, combined with the use of 800V lithium-sulfur EV batteries, positions the Halcyon Concept as a leader in reducing the carbon footprint of EVs.
The reveal of the Halcyon does raise a number of questions about where Chrysler, as a brand, is headed. Down to one model, from two last year, only the Pacifica remains available for purchase. This was planned as 2025 promises the arrival of an all-new all-electric SUV as well as a refreshed Pacifica minivan.
Despite the press release noting that Chrysler will be transitioning to an all-electric portfolio by 2028, talks during the backgrounder presentation about a mixed propulsion strategy for the automaker were discussed by representatives. In other words, much like GM, we can expect more PHEVs along with EVs. One of the latter should be an all-electric minivan – it looks like the Volkswagen ID. Buzz won’t be alone for very long.
Although the Halcyon Concept will more than likely not morph into a production model, it does stand as a beacon of what’s to come from Chrysler. Let’s hope it can recapture some if not all its former glory with a collection of new electrified models.
