Consumer Reports Ranks Best, Worst Brands for Reliability

Reliability reports ranked

  • Member surveys used to rank automakers

  • Domestic brands and pickups trail

Who makes the most reliable cars? Lexus, Toyota, and… Mini? That’s according to the results of Consumer Reports’ annual reliability brand rankings.

Consumer Reports rates automaker reliability by surveying its members. This year’s survey got data on more than 330,000 vehicles, from model year 2000 through to 2024. CR then studies 20 trouble areas ranging from what it calls “nuisances” to “major bummers.” Squeaky brakes might fall into the former, a new engine into the latter.

Rounding out the top 10 were Acura, Honda, Subaru, Mazda, Porsche, BMW, and Kia. The bottom five were Jeep, Volkswagen, Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, and Chrysler.

CR noted that seven of the 10 most reliable brands come from automakers from Asia, with that region earning a 63 score for predicted reliability. Euro automakers earned a 46, but domestic brands trailed with a score of 39.

Cars were more reliable than SUVs and minivans, with a score of 57 to 50 and 45. Pickups were the least reliable with an average of 41.

Hybrid models were another highlight, with 26 percent fewer problems than internal-combustion-only vehicles. PHEV models, though, had 146 percent more issues than gas engine counterparts.
