Could Genesis Build Coupe and Convertible Versions of the G90?

Genesis is only about a decade old, but Hyundai’s luxury division isn’t short on ambition. Show after show, it has rolled out spectacular coupe and convertible concepts. Now, two of those designs have cleared an interesting hurdle: the company has been granted U.S. design patents for the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible, both based on the G90 sedan.

  • Both patents were granted in August

  • Genesis still refers to them as design studies

  • Ultra-luxury coupes and convertibles have become a rare breed

Nothing’s Confirmed Yet

It’s worth remembering that a patent is not a production announcement. Automakers routinely protect model names, technologies and prototypes that never make it to the assembly line.

Genesis, for its part, is still calling them concepts.

Still, the encouraging signs keep piling up. The convertible’s patent came through on August 4, followed by the coupe’s on August 25. Both applications were filed in July 2025, a few months after the two cars were unveiled at the Seoul Mobility Show. At a glance, they seem close to road-ready.

The styling is genuinely striking, too, with an endless hood, flared fenders, long doors and the brand’s signature two-line lighting. Elegance doesn’t get much better than this.

Taking the Road Less Travelled

What leads us to believe these models could reach showrooms is Genesis‘ determination to stand apart. The brand is intent on offering products nobody else has, and what better way to do that than by betting on body styles the rest of the industry has walked away from? While everyone else keeps churning out SUVs, you can count the luxury two-doors still on sale on one hand. Think Bentley Continental GT, Mercedes-Maybach SL or Lexus LC.

Swimming against the current carries risk. But for a young brand still building its image, the gamble could very well pay off.

Add this one to our long list of stories to watch. We may learn more in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where Genesis has unveiled similar electric concepts before.
