We can already figure the new Mustang Shelby GT500 will be difficult to get and expensive. But $40,000 over sticker?
YouTuber Speed Phenom got quite the surprise when he took his current Shelby GT350R to his local Ford dealership to get some info on the upcoming Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Hopping to maybe get special treatment because he’s currently a client, he was instead shut down by a sales rep who didn’t appear too jolly according to the video.
“Basically, what I heard the guy say was I don’t care how many Ford you bought from us, I don’t care how many years you’ve been coming here with your cars to get worked on or serviced, or on top of that I don’t care how many social media followers you have, it does nothing for us”, was apparently what the Ford dealer said.
“If you’re not going to pay $40,000 over, there’s the door”, was the gist of the interaction.
Now, a few comments here. For one, I tend to agree that social media followers shouldn’t play a role in whether you get access to a car or not. Let’s just say the audience is difficult to define, and Ford probably won’t sell more Shelby Mustang GT500 cars because one YouTuber bought it. The supply and demand equation for a car like this means it needs very little promotion.
As for the $40,000 premium, it kind of has to be expected. Again, supply and demand dictate that you can charge that kind of extra and you will still sell the cars. It may not be right, but can you really blame the dealer?
What we do have a problem with, is the apparent arrogance of the dealership. Granted, we don’t have the other side and who know’s what really went down during the conversation. Maybe we’re being baited into writing about it and we’re all suckers. Maybe the sales rep was very nice about the whole thing and just kindly explained that there would be a premium on the car.
But, we can also imagine a sales representative being arrogant with someone inquiring about a Shelby GT500. It happens too often unfortunately.
The only thing we know for sure is this; Speed Phenom isn’t getting a GT500 from that dealership any time soon.
