Defender Rally Unveils the Defender Dakar D7X-R Ahead of its Debut at the Dakar Rally in January

Defender Rally is getting ready to take part in the 2026 Dakar Rally with the D7X-R, a purpose -built version of the Defender Octa.

  • This rally-ready SUV is a modified Defender Octa that will compete in the new “Stock” category.

  • Modifications include the bodywork, the suspension, and a 550-litre fuel tank.

  • The Defender Dakar D7X-R will be subjected to 80 hours of competitive driving over two weeks, covering around 5,000 km.

Defender Rally has unveiled the Defender Dakar D7X-R, its entry into the upcoming 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) to be held in January.

This off-road racing SUV is a modified version of the production Defender Octa, but its modifications have been made in accordance with the FIA rules for the new “Stock” category, which will be introduced with the next Dakar Rally.

This means that the D7X-R retains the basic architecture of the production model, along with the 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission, and the overall driveline layout.

Some modifications of these elements are allowed, such that the transmission will feature a lower final drive ratio than the Octa, in addition to improved engine cooling by way of an increased frontal area, four electric fans, and a large single radiator in place of the three smaller radiators used in other Defender models.

Due to FIA regulations that limit engine power per kilo of vehicle weight, an air intake restrictor will lower the output below the Octa’s 626 horsepower rating. The final figure will be determined closer to the race, at the start of next year.

Unsurprisingly, the suspension has also been significantly altered, featuring a single coil-over design at the front and parallel twin dampers at the rear developed in collaboration with Bilstein, which also supplies dampers for the production models.

This performance damping system is not only made to withstand the challenges of desert racing, but also to support the weight of the massive 550-litre fuel tank that has been fitted inside the D7X-R’s bodyshell, behind the front seats.

This increased fuel capacity is necessary to complete some of the off-road segments of the rally, the longest of which stretched for over 800 kilometres last year.

Ride height has been increased over the regular Defender Octa, and the track has been made 60 mm wider. 35-inch off-road tires have also been fitted. Improved underbody protection plates and a performance braking system are also included.

Inside, an FIA-regulated navigation system and head-up display are joined by a driver-configurable motorsport dashboard and six buckle seats, which can be tailored to each of the three pairs of drivers to ensure comfort over hours of competitive driving.

The powertrain electronics are controlled by a single unit, which includes a new flight mode, which alters the engine’s torque when the vehicle is airborne, helping to smooth out landings and protect the driveline over the many jumps encountered over the course of the race.

Also found inside the Defender Dakar D7X-R are three spare wheels, a roll cage, a tool kit, compressed air, spare parts, a pair of hydraulic jacks, and eight litres of drinking water.

The 2026 Dakar rally will take place over the course of two weeks, where participating vehicles will suffer through 80 hours of off-road performance driving and cover a distance of 5,000 kilometres.

To make sure their creation is ready to tackle this event, Defender Rally has completed over 6,000 kilometres of testing in similar conditions.

The 2026 edition of the Dakar Rally will begin on January 3rd, in Saudi Arabia.
