Did the Chinese Sylphy Just Reveal the New 2026 Nissan Sentra?

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has once again spoiled an automaker’s surprise by releasing details of a new model ahead of schedule. This time, it’s the Nissan Sylphy, which strongly hints at what’s coming for the next Nissan Sentra.

  • The Nissan Sentra is set for an update in 2026

  • Three engine choices are under consideration

  • The 2026 Sentra will be largely based on the Chinese-market Sylphy

The current generation of the Nissan Sentra debuted in 2020 and received a light refresh in 2024. While still competitive, Nissan believes the compact sedan is due for another update. The official reveal is expected soon, but for now, we get a first look at its Chinese twin, the Sylphy.

A Bolder Design

Styling-wise, the 2024 Sentra still looked modern, but Nissan has since introduced a sharper design language with the Ariya and, more recently, the Murano. The Sentra embraces this shift with a more expressive front end, featuring headlights reminiscent of the latest Nissan LEAF.

For added distinction, the Sylphy incorporates extra styling cues into the bumper, including what appear to be additional LED strips—a design approach not unlike what Peugeot uses in Europe.

From the side, the hood cut-out remains identical to the 2020 model, confirming this is a facelift rather than an all-new generation. Wheel designs are fresh, with options ranging from 16- to 18-inch alloys or hubcaps, depending on trim level.

The window line has been revised, dropping the floating roof design that has characterized many recent Nissan products. At the rear, the taillights now stretch across the trunk with a clear, slightly smoked lens.

The dimensions see slight changes, with the exception of the wheelbase, which remains the same. This confirms Nissan’s cost-conscious strategy: reusing the current platform keeps development expenses in check while extending the model’s lifecycle—a common approach across the industry today.

Possible Big Changes Under the Hood

Currently, the 2025 Sentra comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a CVT or a six-speed manual transmission available on base and SR trims.

That engine is likely to carry over, but Nissan has other options in mind. Among them, the Sentra 2026 could adopt the Rogue’s 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, good for 201 horsepower, offering more punch for driving enthusiasts. Hybridization is also under consideration, which would allow the Sentra to better compete with the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and especially the Toyota Corolla, which comes in multiple hybrid variants.

The Last Survivor

With the Altima set to be discontinued by the end of 2025 and the Versa likely following suit, the Sentra—alongside the Nissan Z—would become the brand’s last sedan standing. The model continues to enjoy popularity in Québec, where compact cars are experiencing a resurgence in demand, making the Sentra more relevant than ever.

Pricing remains under wraps, but a moderate increase can be expected in line with the updates. For reference, the 2025 Sentra ranges from $26,505 to $33,755, keeping it among the most affordable compact sedans in Canada.

Where Will It Be Built?

At present, the Sentra is produced in Mexico for the North American market. Unlike the Pathfinder or Frontier, the sedan avoids tariffs in Canada, though that’s not the case in the United States. This has sparked rumours that Nissan could shift part of production stateside. For Canadian buyers, however, Mexican production is expected to continue.
