Dodge Makes the 6.4L “392” V8 Standard on the 2026 Durango R/T

  • In this application, the 392 makes 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

  • The Durango R/T 392 is capable of 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and a 12.9-second quarter mile.

  • The 5,7L Hemi V8 is now available only in the GT trim level.

In keeping with its decision to bring back the V8 engine in its pickup trucks and the Charger, Stellantis now adds the 6.4L “392” V8 to the Dodge Durango R/T.

While the Durango never lost the 5,7L Hemi V8, unlike Ram pickups, a larger-engined version sitting between the previous R/T and the Hellcat didn’t seem to be in the cards until recently.

Interestingly, the 2026 Durango R/T will come standard with the 6.4L engine instead of the 5,7L Hemi that had been standard for years prior.

This means that the entry-level GT trim will be available with either the 3.6L Pentastar V6 or the 5.7L Hemi V8, the R/T will have exclusive use of the 6.4L engine, and the Hellcat will keep its supercharged 6.2L unit.

Compared to the 2025 R/T, the 2026 version benefits from an increase of 115 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque, for a total of 475 and 470, respectively.

According to Dodge, this output is sufficient for a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint of 4.4 seconds and an NHRA-certified 12.9 second quarter mile.

To rein in this power, the 2026 Dodge Durango R/T also comes with Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes, along with adaptive high-performance dampers and a limited-slip rear axle.

Red “392” badges on the fenders denote the new engine, and the first models to roll out of the factory will be part of the Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition, which will also feature body-coloured fender flares and a distinctive rear spoiler.

Inside, buyers will find Nappa leather and suede upholstery, along with heated rear seats as well as heated and ventilated front seats.

In addition, the Premium Model optional package adds carbon fibre interior accents, leather-wrapped instrument and door panels, a suede headliner, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and upgraded two-piece brake rotors, among other changes.

The Blacktop package is also available, along with five stripe options.

Thanks to its more powerful engine, the 2026 Dodge Durango R/T 392 features the highest tow rating of the Durango lineup, and in fact, of the entire three-row SUV segment.

This means that the Durango R/T 392 can tow up to 3,946 kilos (8,700 pounds), which is not that far off from some quarter-ton pickups.

Canadian pricing will be announced later, but we know that the U.S. market MSRP has been set at $49,995 for the 2026 Durango R/T 392, which is $6,320 more than the GT powered by the 5.7L V8.

For its part, the R/T 392 Premium Model is priced from $57,595 in the United States.
