Does 313 Horsepower a GT Make For Kia EV5?

EV5 gets a go-fast model

  • EV5 GT leaked to make 313 hp

  • Model expected to follow base EV5 to launch

Kia is planning a GT version of its brand-new EV5 electric SUV. But the next Kia GT won’t get quite the power of its EV6 sibling.

The Kia EV5 is a Sportage-sized electric crossover meant to fit in a couple of segments below the EV9 in size. Thanks to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, AutoHome China has dug up information about a Kia EV5 GT high-performance model.

Kia’s EV5 GT will have a twin motor system with 215 hp in the front and 98 in the back. That’s a combined total of 313 hp, and while it’s far from the 576hp of the EV6 GT, it’s not exactly an embarrassment.

The same data dump had some information about the standard version of the EV5. We now know it’ll be 4,615 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, and 1,715 mm tall. That puts it right on top of the Tesla Model Y, the best-selling EV in the world last year.

Expect versions with 530 km of range and 720 km of range, at least on the cycle China uses for its EVs. No word on what pack the GT will come with, but it’s likely to be the larger size and not a new one.

The Kia EV5 is still set for sale in Canada, though we’re not sure exactly when it could arrive. The model is expected to start well under $45,000 in Canada, though that’s still speculation.
