Electrify America Unveiled its Prototype for Future Charging Stations

Electrify America released images of the prototype for its future charging stations.

  • The stations will have a similar look to fuel stations, with large awnings and multiple charging stalls

  • There will be customer waiting spaces and a valet service will be available in select locations

  • Solar panels and energy storage solutions will reduce the impact of these stations on the grid

Electrify America is one of the leading providers of public charging for electric vehicles in the United States and it has now revealed its vision for the future.

The company manages over 730 stations which account for more than 2,400 individual CCS chargers, in addition to a number of CHAdeMO and AC level 2 plugs around the country.

The prototype called “The Charging Station of the Future, Today” shows a departure form the current design of Electrify America stations that is supposed to make them more convenient and more efficient.

The actual design of the prototype closely reassembles the layout of a large fuel station, with multiple rows of chargers that are installed in an island formation where a vehicle can be parked on each side of the unit, thus allowing for more chargers in a smaller space than the current designs, where the cars are forced to park side by side in a single line.

Another improvement that is made possible by that design is the installation of large awnings on top of the stalls which will shield users from the sun or from precipitations.

Covered waiting areas are also planned for drivers who would prefer to step out of the car while the battery is being replenished. These areas will include lounges, displays for new electric vehicles (Electrify America is owned by the Volkswagen group) as well as spaces for events.

Security will be assured by cameras and strong lighting, while some select locations, such as those adjacent to a large shopping center will feature a valet charging service where employees will take the car from the customer drop off location, charge it and then bring it to its owners when they are ready to leave.

These new stations will use the next generation chargers from Electrify America which will feature a new design that will reduce the footprint of each unit and make them more user friendly, while keeping some distinctive elements, such as the green colour scheme and the 8-foot-tall stature.

In order to reduce the impact of these stations on the power grid, the awnings will be fitted with solar panels and energy storage solutions will be implemented on site in order to provide a part of the power needed to charge the vehicles that use the station.
