Ram and Jeep are back with big-deal ads
Most of last year’s automakers left the stadium
It’s the best day of the year for fans of Strigiformes. The Superb Owl is upon us, the biggest game of hand-egg of the season, with tens of millions of viewers expected to tune in to watch Taylor Swift’s boyfriend beat up on a different kind of bird from Philadelphia [Ed: This didn’t age well at all]
We are, of course, talking about Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. More specifically, we’re talking about the best car ads from the big game. It’s the Super Bowl of advertising as every company tries to out-do its competition to be at the top of your brain on Monday morning.
So here are all of the car ads from Super Bowl LIX that have been revealed so far.
Häagen-Dazs
Is an ad for ice cream a car ad? It is when it stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ludacris. They’re revisiting their Fast and Furious Franchise characters, but this time, instead of destroying entire economies in car crashes, they’re out for a drive and a nice frozen snack.
Ram Trucks
Ram has been away from the game for a while, and is back with actor Glen Powell as Goldilocks in an update of the fairy tale. Powell took a Ram HD, Ram 1500, and Ram RHO for three different adventures, though we’re not sure he ever decided on which one was just right.
Jeep
Jeep brought out the big guns this time, with Harrison Ford sitting in a cabin and speaking gruffly. He’s talking about heroes and freedom and reminding you that Jeep started out as a war machine. He takes a dig at the Ford Bronco, saying imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Still, he also has something to say about gas versus electric – or at least the copywriters do – and that is that it’s ok to drive a 392 Hemi Jeep, and it’s ok to drive an electric Jeep. Which might be the best message of all.
WeatherTech
Floor mat specialists and saviors of print car magazines are out for a drive with four senior citizen friends in a drop-top 1960s Lincoln Continental. They’re out for fun, flashing Bingo callers, spray painting transports, and running from the cops. Of course, they have protective floor mats, so it’s all good.
Oh, and we checked. This ad’s a big phony. WeatherTech offers mats for more than 10,000 vehicles, but a ’61-’69 Continental isn’t on the list.
Ok, so the list is short this year. Jeep and Ram are back, but Kia is sitting out after 14 consecutive games. BMW and Volkswagen are also both out. Shame, because Kia’s hearstring-pulling ad last year was ranked as the third most popular. Here it is again, in case you missed it.
