Many manufacturers are jumping into the commercial EVs segment as there’s lots of money to be made. GM’s BrightDrop business will provide businesses with a series of electrified products as well as logistic support. FedEx will be the first company to take delivery of the new electric van.
The all-new EV600 electric cargo van is powered by GM’s Ultium battery technology which will enable up to 250 miles (402km) of range on a full charge. It will be capable of fast charging at 120kW meaning that downtime should be brief. The EV600 will also include a full suite of active safety systems.
As the name suggests, it will have up to 600 cubic feet of cargo capacity and, beyond utility, the cargo hold will feature a security system with motion sensors. BrightDrop’s first product is called the EP1 which is an electric pallet that can carry up to 200lbs (91kg) and roll at speeds of up to 3mph (5km/h).
FedEx can expect its vans to arrive by the end of 2021.
These vans are relatively cost-effective to produce meaning that margins are huge. This explains why companies like GM, Ford, Rivian, and others are investing in the segment.
