A hybrid version of the Escape compact SUV will be making a comeback this year, joining a wave of new electrified Ford models including SUVs and the F-150 pickup.
The last Ford Escape Hybrid was discontinued in 2012 when the current-generation Escape launched. As Ford now turns its attention to the next Escape, spy shots have emerged showing what certainly appears to be a new-generation model with a typical hybrid vehicle instrument cluster.
We asked Ford about it and they confirmed the news. There will be a Ford Escape Hybrid sometime later this year. It will be joined by other electrified models including an electric F-150 and something Ford is calling a “Mustang-inspired battery electric performance SUV”.
“We are on track and electrifying our most popular vehicles, including launching the all-new Ford Explorer and Ford Escape hybrids this year along with the new F-150 Hybrid in 2020″,Christine Hollander, Ford Canada communications manager, told us by email earlier today.
“We are also on track to launch our all-new Mustang-inspired battery electric performance SUV next year. We’ll have more news to share about additional electric and hybrid vehicles in North America and globally later this year”, she added.
That engine would certainly work well in a Mustang-inspired battery electric performance SUV. As for the Ford Escape hybrid, we don’t know yet if Ford will go with a plug-in, ENERGI type model or use some kind of EcoBoost-themed hybrid four-cylinder.
At this point, however, we are just speculating.
