Ford F-Series Keeps Top Sales Spot, Toyota Best-Selling Brand in 2022

The sales races for 2022

  • Sales were down, but the positions largely unchanged in 2022

  • Tesla climbs to top three in two of its segments

2022 was, once again, an automotive sales year turned upside down by supply chain issues. But there were still some winners and some losers on the sales charts, so here’s a look at some of the big sales races in the US last year.

Toyota was the top-selling brand despite sales falling almost 9 percent last year, using data from Automotive News. The company moved 1.85 million vehicles. Ford was second with 1.8m sales and saw a loss of just 2.1 percent. The big winner was Chevrolet, which was up 5.7 percent to 1.5 million.

Those were the only three brands to top one million sales in the US last year. Honda saw its sales down 33 percent to end up at 881,201 and Hyundai was next with 724,265.

The best-selling vehicle was Ford’s F-Series pickup. Ford moved 653,957 of its pickup, down 1.2 percent from last year. Chevrolet saw smaller losses and the Silverado was able to take the number 2 spot back from Ram. The fourth-best-selling pickup was the GMC Sierra, snagging that place away from the Toyota Tacoma.

Tesla had the most EV sales, with around 491,000 sold. Ford was second with 61,575, but Ford’s 126 percent increase over 2021 was a massive uptick in sales. Tesla’s sales put the Model 3 at an estimated 198,200, making it the third-best-selling car in 2022 after the Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla. With 295,201 Camries sold, Tesla still has a long way to go.

The best-selling crossover was the Toyota RAV4 once again, with a hair under 400,000 units moved. Second place for crossovers is estimated to be the Tesla Model Y with 253,793 units sold.
