The Bronco has built its reputation as a genuine off-roader, backed by seriously impressive capability. While plenty of SUVs try to sell buyers on an outdoorsy lifestyle, the Bronco truly embodies it. So it’s no shock that Ford keeps pushing the envelope with this model, and its latest patent filing offers a perfect example: a premium camping package looks to be in the works.
Ford has filed for multiple patents aimed at expanding the Bronco’s camping capability
The concepts include an interior sleeping platform and rooftop tent options
Several of these features already exist through aftermarket suppliers
A Fold-Out Platform and Rooftop Tents
Among the concepts shown in the automaker’s filings is a fold-out platform designed to make in-cabin camping easier. The front seatbacks could even double as small nightstands, letting campers keep a few creature comforts from home.
On the roof, Ford is looking at several tent sizes, with the largest version propped up by stabilizing legs anchored to the vehicle’s fenders. You could get up to that elevated sleeping space through the standard sunroof or a much wider, full-length opening.
One diagram even shows a mesh screen for that larger opening, making it possible to sleep under open sky without worrying about mosquitoes and other unwelcome guests.

Taking on the Aftermarket
None of this is groundbreaking on its own. Specialized aftermarket suppliers already sell most of these accessories. By bringing these solutions in-house, with factory-level fit and finish and likely a warranty to back them up, Ford is looking to beat those aftermarket players at their own game.
After all, if enthusiasts are already buying these upgrades elsewhere, why not offer them directly? Fair game, as far as competitive strategy goes.
Granted, this is still in the sketch-and-patent-filing stage. It’s tough to say right now whether these ideas will actually reach production, but the filing makes Ford’s interest in this space pretty clear.
It’s easy to picture a dedicated outdoor-focused Bronco trim down the road, not unlike what Toyota offers with its Trailhunter lineup.
We will follow this closely.
