Lightning production began only a few days ago.
This new electric truck will possibly be Ranger-sized.
There can be little doubt that Ford is vigorously working on developing more electric trucks. Examples of the F-150 Lightning are already rolling off the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, assembly line and although it will surely account for massive EV volume for the Blue Oval, plenty of room remains for a smaller electric truck. And it’s coming.
Ford will have managed to be second in the larger electric truck race, behind Rivian. Even so, they’ll be #1 in sales before we know it. And if Ford is first to market with a small or midsize electric truck, they’ll corner that segment as well.
It was Ford CEO Jim Farley who told Motor Trend that a new electric truck is coming. No further details were shared however there are really only two possible “options.” The hot Maverick could be a contender but it’s unlikely as battery and EV technologies remain costly. The small Maverick is doing very for many reasons, one being affordability.
This is why a Ranger-sized electric truck is more likely. This EV will power its way into a growing segment that includes the likes of the Toyota Tacoma, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Chevrolet Colorado.
Another “hint” or possible link is that Volkswagen is studying the possibility of launching an electric truck of their own in the future. Ford and VW have a working agreement…
