Fourth-Generation Acura RDX to Feature Brand’s First Hybrid Powertrain

Acura to give customers what they want with the introduction of a hybrid-electric RDX in a few years

  • Acura’s fourth-gen RDX will debut a new dual motor hybrid-electric powertrain in Canada.

  • The current RDX model will end production in the first half of 2026.

  • The hybrid RDX is part of Acura’s strategy to expand EV, hybrid, and ICE vehicle options.

Acura has confirmed that the next-generation RDX will introduce a new dual motor, hybrid-electric powertrain, marking the first time the brand has equipped one of its vehicles with this system. The fourth-generation RDX is currently in development and is expected to arrive at Canadian dealerships within the next couple of years.

The upcoming hybrid RDX is part of Acura’s product strategy to diversify its lineup with a mix of internal combustion, hybrid-electric, and battery-electric vehicles, and to counter many rivals that already offer electrified models. The new hybrid system is described as a next-generation dual motor setup, although no technical specifications have been released.

Acura stated that the current third-generation RDX will end production in the first half of 2026 to prepare for the launch of the new model. This leads us to believe that a new gasoline RDX may launch first with an introduction this summer. The hybrid RDX will hit the road sometime afterwards.

“We are excited to introduce our fourth-generation RDX as it will be the first Acura powered by our all-new, dual motor, hybrid-electric system,” said Nathan Muir, Assistant Vice President, Acura Canada. “This new hybrid model diversifies the Acura family as we will soon offer a mix of hybrid, EV and ICE models.”

The current RDX is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder that produces 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Based on Honda’s current hybrid powertrain, which couples a naturally-aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder with an electric motor, we can assume Acura will stick with an NA engine. Whether it will be a 4-cylinder or, more interestingly, a V6 with two electric motors remains to be seen.

Originally introduced for the 2007 model year, the RDX has become a key vehicle in Acura’s lineup, with cumulative North American sales reaching approximately 850,000 units. The model was the brand’s first compact SUV and has evolved through three generations to date.

The first-generation RDX (2007–2012) featured a turbocharged engine and debuted the brand’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, and was way ahead of its time. The second generation (2013–2018) introduced a V6 engine and enhancements to comfort and interior design. The third-generation RDX (2019–2026) returned to turbocharging and integrated the latest SH-AWD system.
