Foxconn is best known for being the manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone
The company wants to enter the automotive industry both as an automaker and a manufacturing partner
The new concepts are the Model B SUV and the Model V pickup
With more and more new companies trying their hand at making cars, it is not surprising to see an established manufacturing giant such as Foxconn presenting its own EV concepts.
The Taiwanese company has been making Apple’s iPhones for many years and believes it is now ready to expand its horizons to the automotive industry.
Foxconn wants to make its entrance as an automaker in two different ways. Indeed, the company wants to become a manufacturing partner that can produce vehicles on behalf of another company, as well as a fully integrated automaker that produces its own designs.
The first part of this plan is already underway since Foxconn bought an old GM factory in Ohio where it has now begun making electric pickup trucks for Lordstown Motors. Foxconn has also signed a contract with Fisker to build the upcoming PEAR. The company’s chairman also hopes to make vehicles for Tesla in the future.
The second part of the plan is related to the concepts that have been unveiled today at the Hon Hai Tech Day.
Foxconn presented two concepts that look to be almost ready to enter production since they seem to have all of the required details which are often absent on concept cars, such as exterior lamps, door handles, and mirrors.
The Model B is an electric crossover that will apparently have a drag coefficient of only 0.26 due to its streamlined exterior style and advanced aerodynamic development. This should give the vehicle a range of around 280 miles (451 kilometres) according to the automaker.
The company had less to say about the Model V electric pickup, other than it will have a payload of 1 ton and a towing capacity of 3 tons. This model will also be fitted with a large number of sensors which will make it possible to offer “intelligent technologies” to drivers.
A larger SUV, the Model C, was also present on stage but it had already been unveiled back in 2021, when the company said it will have a range of 435 miles (700 kilometres) and it will be able to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.8 seconds.
Foxconn has not said when it intends these vehicles to become available to the public, so this could take a few years still.
