General Motors is recalling 10,010 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EVs in Canada due to a rather unusual problem: the vehicle is too silent at low speeds.
The units were built between August 2023 and August 2024
Regulations require hybrid and electric vehicles to emit a sound at speeds below 30 km/h.
A total of 10,010 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EVs are affected by the recall.
Your first reaction may be to tell us that this is perfectly normal, given that we are dealing with an all-electric vehicle. However, we must not forget pedestrians and cyclists. They need to know when such a vehicle is approaching. The same applies to blind people.
That is why electric and hybrid vehicles emit small sounds that are clearly audible when traveling at low speeds, up to 30 km/h, in residential areas, parking lots, and other similar environments.
As Transport Canada states, “Canadian regulations require electric vehicles to make sounds at certain levels when operating at low speeds.”
However, a software issue may prevent the recalled models from emitting an audible warning.
That is why they will need to be “repaired.” The affected vehicles were built between August 2023 and August 2024.
As of this writing, General Motors is working on a solution. The company will notify owners by mail regarding the next steps
For those who own one of the models affected by this recall, while waiting for a solution to this minor problem, exercise extra caution in residential areas if you have noticed that your vehicle no longer makes noise at low speeds.
