Genesis is pulling the plug on its G80e electric sedan. Once the last units are sold in Canada, the model will no longer be part of the North American lineup.
G80e sales have always been modest in Canada
The model carried a starting price of over $105,000
Advertised range was 454 kilometres per charge
This means Genesis will no longer offer an electric sedan in its portfolio. As soon as the remaining examples are gone, the Electrified G80 will be dropped from the North American catalogue. The decision, while unsurprising, follows the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration. Built in South Korea, the car’s already high price tag became even less competitive.

In Canada, no tariffs apply to South Korean vehicles. However, given the model’s low sales volume since its 2022 debut, it’s not surprising management opted to withdraw it from the lineup.
A compelling car nonetheless
Another sedan has fallen victim to the new reality of tariffs and market uncertainty. Yet the G80e had plenty to offer, with 454 kilometres of range from an 87.2-kWh battery and 365 horsepower on tap.

Unfortunately, the brand’s limited recognition and the six-figure price kept many buyers at bay. It’s worth noting that this is a niche segment dominated by fierce German competition, including the Mercedes-Benz EQE, BMW i5, and the newer Audi A6 e-tron. On the American side, the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air also remain strong contenders.
GV90 steps in
For Genesis, phasing out the G80e will have little impact on annual sales. The brand continues to count on the GV60 and GV70 electric models, which remain appealing to consumers. Genesis is also preparing to launch its large GV90 electric SUV, built on the same platform as the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9.

Here’s what Genesis had to say:
“The customer is at the heart of everything we do, and we remain flexible to adapt to the ever-changing needs of consumers and market conditions,” said Jarred Pellat, Senior Manager of Public Relations for Genesis North America. “If you’re looking for a fully electric Genesis, we’ll be more than happy to offer you the GV60 or Electrified GV70.”

No luck for the 2026 upgrades
The G80e’s retirement comes just as the automaker had announced an update for the model. Although this refresh appeared destined for our market, that won’t be the case. Along with revised styling, the updated version was to feature a wheelbase stretched by 5.1 inches and an almost completely redesigned cabin. For now, there’s no indication that the 2026 Genesis Electrified G80 will be sold in Canada.
