GM Issues Recall on Nearly 500k Models For Headlight, Tailgate Problems

GM issues a pair of big recalls

  • GM is recalling pickups for a tailgate switch issue

  • Cars, trucks, and SUVs recalled for headlight switch confusion

General Motors has just issued two large recalls. Each covers more than 200,000 vehicles, with one for a tailgate issue and the other for a problem with the automatic lights.

The light issue is the larger of the two recalls. It affects 273,000 vehicles, all made since 2020. The list includes the Cadillac CT4. CT5, Escalade, Lyriq and XT$, the Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2023 Colorado, Corvette, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC Hummer EV, Sierra, and Yukon.

GM says that the issue is a software problem. If the headlight switch is in “Off” or “Parking Lamp” then the low beams might not turn on when it becomes dark outside. It could also cause the daytime running lamps to stay off when the vehicle is in motion. Though those conditions are exactly what the switch is being told to do, it goes against Canadian vehicle regulations that require DRL illumination as well as new Phantom Vehicle regulations.

The fix is a free software update done at a dealer. Contact your GM dealer or GM Customer Care for more information.

The second recall affects 222,490 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups including the HD models. The problem is that water can leak into the tailgate switch. On trucks with a power locking tailgate, that could cause the tailgate to unlatch. GM says it can only unlatch – and then possibly open unexpectedly – while parked, but that could still lead to a hazard if the owner didn’t notice and drove away.

GM will notify owners to take their trucks to a dealership for a new tailgate switch. In the meantime, GM recommends that owners make sure the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.
