This is not the first time that GM’s toyed with the idea of producing multiple variations of America’s sports car. This however would be the first time the acronym SUV attaches itself to the Vette.
GM must be taking notes from the success of all other automakers, including Lamborghini, Bentley, and others, are having with their premium performance SUVs. Closer to home, although not an exact comparison, Ford’s decision to loan the Mustang name to an electric SUV makes, at the very least, marketing sense.
Bloomberg reports that GM designers are working on numerous Corvette-branded concepts that are purposefully meant to attract a broader audience. These vehicle studies, which are referred to as part of Project R or Brand R, are meant to blend the Corvette’s well-established reputation for high-performance driving with a more utilitarian body. Picture the upcoming electric Corvette with a beefed-up Chevrolet Traverse body…
The report goes on to say that this new Corvette SUV could go on sale as early as 2025 although it’s likely that it will arrive later than that.
