Grab a Torch and Custom Colour Your Cybertruck

Heating up stainless steel changes the colour, making for art on a Cybertruck canvas

  • Heat and bare stainless combine to let you make fascinating designs

  • You’d best have a steady hand and loads of confidence to not ruin your Cybertruck

Tesla’s Elon Musk is just starting to show off now, revealing that if you want your stainless steel Cybertruck in a different colour, then, well, you can make yourself one. But you’d better be sure, because it’s very much permanent unless you want to refinish the entire vehicle.

It started with a tweet showing off how easy it is to laser etch metals like the stainless steel skin of the Tesla Cybertruck, letting you put your own twist on graphics on the body panels. The lasers remove material, so the design is more or less permanent. Unless you’re willing to sand the whole thing down or paint and filler.

But it doesn’t stop there, because another fan asked if it would be possible to change the colour of the Tesla truck using heat. Changing the temper of the stainless steel to amazing effect.

“Yes,” read the typically short Tweet response from the CEO, but before you start thinking about a Hypercolor-style effect on your truck, that’s not what they mean here. Normalised stainless, which is what you would normally see when you look at stainless steel is a silver colour. Applying some more heat can change the temper and change the colour, over a delightful range of yellow, purple, blue, and green colours.

Except that you can’t easily change it back. To remove the colour, you’d need to wipe every bit of steel with a special mix of acids. And you need to get the temperature exact or it’ll look like you were just drawing on the side of your expensive new truck.

Is it cool? You bet, and Musk himself said he’d get blue steel (a nod to Zoolander), but there are some interesting possibilities to be had. If you’re committed.
