The Alltrack makes for an interesting test vehicle. It’s AWD, but it’s not heavy—about 3,600 pounds with me and my camera gear inside. The 1.8T engine provides enough power for highway merges, but this isn’t a performance car… usually. Mine is somewhat different (read: modified) with nearly double the original power. What I need from winter tires is confidence on the icy backroads between Montreal and Mont-Tremblant, predictable handling in the slushy mess after a January storm, and enough dry-pavement civility that I’m not white-knuckling it on clear highway commutes.
The Engineering Promise: Grip That Lasts
Hankook’s technical pitch revolves around what they’re calling the “new i*cept compound”—a formula that uses highly refined resin and flexible polymer chains to keep the rubber pliable even at extreme sub-zero temperatures. The goal is to let the tread conform to microscopic ice imperfections while maintaining the structural integrity needed to resist wear.
The result, according to Hankook’s internal testing against the previous-generation iZ2, is 9% better ice braking and 11% improved ice acceleration. Those are the numbers I’m most curious about. Quebec winters aren’t just about heavy snow anymore; they’re also about the ice that forms on residential streets after a freeze-thaw cycle, the kind that turns a routine stop sign into a sliding challenge guided by the rhythm of the ABS doing its job.

What makes me cautiously optimistic is the tire’s specific “angled ice-grip slits” technology. These aren’t the standard siping patterns you find on most winter tires. Indeed, they are small, directional cuts that run at different angles from the main 3D sipes, creating additional biting edges optimized specifically for longitudinal grip—forward acceleration and backward braking. If that works as advertised, it should translate to shorter stopping distances on the icy stretch of the neighbourhood’s small streets I drive multiple times a week, while crossing people coming in way too hot to a stop sign.

The tread pattern is aggressively directional, built around wide V-shaped lateral grooves that Hankook claims are 24% wider than conventional winter tires. The purpose here is slush evacuation, and that matters enormously for my driving reality. Montreal doesn’t always get picture-perfect powder—we get wet, heavy snow that turns into ankle-deep slush on the highways, the kind that hides beneath your wheels and makes steering feel vague and unsettling.
I’m particularly interested to see how the iZ3 handles the transition zones: that moment when you’re driving on what looks like clear pavement and suddenly hit a patch of standing slush at 100 km/h. Will the wide grooves channel water and slush away quickly enough to prevent hydroplaning? Will the 3D serrated sipes lock the tread blocks together and maintain steering precision?

The Alltrack’s AWD system will help, but only if the tires can maintain contact patch integrity. I’ve driven through enough sketchy late-winter conditions to know that AWD doesn’t fix bad tires.
The Acoustic Compromise I’m Expecting
Here’s where I’m tempering my expectations. Wide, aggressive V-grooves are fantastic for moving slush, but they’re also notorious for generating road noise. The same channels that evacuate water also act as resonance chambers on dry pavement, creating what’s often described as a “drone” at highway speeds.
I’m prepared for this. The Alltrack isn’t a luxury car, and I’ve never expected library-quiet winter tires. But I am curious about how much noise we’re talking. Will it be a low hum I can tune out, or will I need to crank the stereo just to hear podcasts on my daily commute? This is an 80,000-km tire, which means if it’s unbearably loud, I’ll be living with that drone for three or four winters.

What Success Looks Like
I’ll be evaluating the iZ3 on three primary criteria: ice braking confidence, snow traction stability, and tread longevity. The first two should become apparent within the first or second month of testing as Quebec’s winter conditions intensify. The third is a multi-year question that I’ll report back on at the end of the winter, through tread depth measurements and visual inspections.
What I’m hoping for is a tire that delivers the straight-line ice grip Hankook promises, handles the Alltrack’s weight distribution predictably in deep snow, and wears slowly enough that the 80,000-km warranty isn’t just a marketing gimmick. What I’m watching for is any tendency toward unpredictable breakaway behaviour in corners—something I won’t tolerate on icy backroads where guardrails are suggestions and ditches are deep.
The iZ3 offers major cost savings over premium alternatives, but only if it performs well. I’ll report back once I’ve put a few thousand winter kilometres on them and seen how they handle Quebec’s worst.
