Vehicles are placed into six categories: Word Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Urban Car, and World Car Design of the Year.
The winners will be announced on April 1st, at the start of the New York Auto Show.
The finalists have been selected by a panel of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries.
Every year, a large jury of automotive journalists from countries around world votes to determine which new vehicle deserves the title of World Car of the Year.
For 2026, 98 journalists from 33 countries have selected the best cars in each of six categories, and will be tasked with picking winners later this month.
Indeed, the finalists currently include three models per category, only one of which will receive the title during a ceremony at the opening of the New York Auto Show, on April 1st.
Here are the finalists for each category:
World Car of the Year
Eligibility criteria: Vehicles must be produced at a volume of at least 10,000 units per year, be priced below the “luxury” level in their primary market, and must be available in at least two major markets on at least two continents.
BMW iX3
The 2026 BMW iX3 is a primary contender for World Car of the Year, representing the debut of BMW’s “Neue Klasse” platform and a fundamental shift toward a digital, software-defined future. Central to its nomination is the “Heart of Joy” computing architecture, which integrates powertrain and chassis management to deliver superior agility and a characteristically BMW driving experience. The 50 xDrive model features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 469 hp and utilizes sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 800V architecture. This setup delivers a range of up to 650 km and supports 400 kW DC fast charging that can take the battery from 10 to 80% in 21 minutes. With a 34% reduction in its lifecycle carbon footprint, the iX3 establishes a new benchmark for sustainable performance.
Hyundai Palisade
The 2026 Hyundai Palisade stands as a finalist for its successful evolution into a more versatile flagship, balancing premium refinement with significantly enhanced utility. This new generation is defined by a 2.7-inch wheelbase extension that prioritizes interior volume and the introduction of a rugged XRT PRO variant to capture the adventure-seeking market. Its inclusion in the awards is highlighted by a first-ever 2.5-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain, which generates a combined 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque while targeting an estimated driving range of 996 kilometres. Alternatively, a new 3.5-liter V6 produces 287 hp for traditional towing needs up to 5,000 pounds.
Nissan Leaf
The 2026 Nissan LEAF earns its place as a finalist by successfully reinventing the affordable EV pioneer as a modern, aerodynamic crossover. Transitioning from a hatchback to a sleek “SUV-lite” form factor, the third-generation model achieves a remarkably low 0.26 drag coefficient while introducing segment-first technologies like a dimming panoramic roof. The 2026 Leaf becomes the first Nissan to offer Plug & Charge capability and North American Charging Standard (NACS) compatibility for native access to the Tesla Supercharger network. The powertrain features a new 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack paired with a 214 hp electric motor, delivering an estimated range of up to 488 km. With 150 kW DC fast charging replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes, the LEAF remains a highly practical and accessible entry in the global EV market.
World Electric Vehicle
Eligibility criteria: Vehicles must be powered exclusively by electricity, be produced at a volume of at least 5,000 units per year, and must be available in at least two major markets on at least two continents.
BMW iX3

Given its electric powertrain, the BMW iX3 is also in the running for the Electric Vehicle of the Year award.
Mercedes-Benz CLA
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a finalist for World Electric Vehicle, representing the brand’s most technologically advanced compact sedan to date. Its significance lies in being the first model to run on the proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which utilizes a chip-to-cloud architecture and generative AI to enable a highly personalized “Virtual Assistant.” The CLA also transitions the high-efficiency technology of the VISION EQXX concept to series production, achieving a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.21. The powertrain features an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with an 85-kWh battery and a unique two-speed transmission at the rear axle to optimize both urban acceleration and highway efficiency. In the flagship CLA 350 4MATIC variant, the dual-motor setup produces 349 hp, while the long-range CLA 250+ delivers 268 hp and up to 602 km of range. With 320 kW DC fast charging, it can add 325 kilometres of range in just ten minutes.
Nissan Leaf

Like the BMW iX3, the Nissan Leaf is also in the running for both the titles of World Car of Year and Electric Vehicle of the year.
World Luxury Car
Eligibility criteria: Vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units per year, must be priced above the “luxury” level in their primary market, and must be available in at least two major markets on at least two continents.
Cadillac Vistiq
The 2026 Cadillac Vistiq is a finalist for World Luxury Car, positioned as the sophisticated three-row anchor of Cadillac’s rapidly expanding electric portfolio. Its significance lies in bridging the gap between the Lyriq and the flagship Escalade IQ, making it one of the few dedicated EV entries in the premium large SUV segment. The Vistiq prioritizes “isolated precision” through standard chassis damping and available Air Ride Adaptive suspension, complemented by an interior that utilizes Brutalist-inspired architectural lines and 100% recycled accent fabrics. The powertrain utilizes a 102-kWh battery pack and a standard dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 615 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. This configuration provides an estimated range of 491 kilometres.
Lucid Gravity
The 2026 Lucid Gravity is a finalist for World Luxury Car, distinguished by its ability to provide the interior utility of a full-size SUV within a mid-size footprint. Its significance lies in Lucid’s high-voltage engineering, which allows for a spacious seven-passenger cabin and a massive 3,400 liters of cargo space without the bulk of traditional luxury competitors. The Gravity debuts a patented 926V architecture that utilizes the rear drive unit to boost charging voltage, ensuring compatibility and maximum speeds across both 500V and 1000V networks. In the Grand Touring trim, the powertrain delivers 828 hp and a projected range exceeding 720 km. With native NACS support for the Tesla Supercharger network and 400 kW fast-charging capability, it can add 320 km of range in approximately 12 minutes, setting a new technical benchmark for the electric luxury segment.
Volvo ES90
The 2026 Volvo ES90 enters the World Luxury Car category as a flagship sedan that redefines Volvo’s electric capabilities through its 800-volt architecture. Its significance lies in a massive leap in efficiency and convenience, utilizing new in-house battery management software and adaptive charging technology to reduce charge times by 30% compared to previous models. Sustainability remains a core pillar, with the vehicle incorporating 29% recycled aluminum and 18% recycled steel, alongside a “battery passport” for full raw material transparency. The powertrain supports 350 kW fast charging, adding 300 km of range in just 10 minutes and reaching a 10–80% charge in 20 minutes. With a total WLTP driving range of up to 700 km, the ES90 combines long-distance performance with Volvo’s hallmark focus on recycled, bio-based interior luxury.
World Performance Car
Eligibility criteria: Vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 500 units per year, must be overtly performance-focused, and must be available in at least two major markets on at least two continents.
BMW M2 CS
The 2026 BMW M2 CS is a finalist for World Performance Car, representing the pinnacle of BMW’s compact high-performance engineering. Produced in limited numbers, this special edition serves as a bridge between a daily driver and a dedicated track tool, featuring a 30 kg weight reduction through the extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and a lightweight CFRP boot lid with an integrated ducktail. The powertrain features an upgraded 3.0-liter straight-six engine producing 530 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. This setup enables a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 302 km/h.
Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray
The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray marks a historic milestone as the first electrified and all-wheel-drive model in the nameplate’s 70-year history. Its “eAWD” system pairs a mid-mounted V8 with a front-mounted electric motor to provide all-season composure and the quickest acceleration of any production Corvette. The vehicle features a “Stealth Mode” for quiet, electric-only neighbourhood driving at speeds up to 45 mph and standard Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes to manage its immense power. The hybrid powertrain combines a 6.2-liter LT2 V8 (495 hp) with a 160 hp electric motor for a total system output of 655 hp. This enables the E-Ray to rocket from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in only 2.5 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds.
Hyundai IONIQ 6 N
The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 6 N represents the second chapter in Hyundai N’s high-performance electric lineup. By adapting the Ioniq 5 N’s powertrain to the aerodynamic body of the Ioniq 6, Hyundai enters the electric performance sedan market. Shared with the Ioniq 5 N, the N e-Shift system simulates the feel of a dual-clutch transmission, and the N Active Sound+ provides auditory feedback. The car features a dual-motor setup delivering a standard 601 hp, which can be pushed to 641 hp via N Grin Boost. This allows for an estimated 0–96 km/h sprint in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 257 km/h. With an 800V architecture, the 84-kWh battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes.
World Urban Car
Eligibility criteria: Vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 vehicles per year, must have a maximum length of 4.25 meters, be approved for use on public roads, and must be available in at least two major markets on at least two continents.
Baojun Yep Plus / Chevrolet Spark EUV
The Baojun Yep Plus (sold as the Chevrolet Spark EUV in some markets) is a finalist for World Urban Car. This five-door electric “cute-ute” is designed to prioritize personality and maneuverability, featuring a compact 3,996 mm length that hides a surprisingly versatile cabin. Power is delivered by a front-mounted 101 hp motor producing 133 lb-ft of instant torque, paired with a 42 kWh LFP battery. This setup provides an estimated range of 298 km (WLTP), making it a highly efficient city runner. Inside, this small EV features a “digital cockpit” with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, alongside a 360-degree camera and hands-free start for seamless urban navigation. The Baojun Yep Plus is manufactured by Wuling Autos, which has a partnership with General Motors.
Firefly
The 2026 Firefly marks the debut of NIO’s new lifestyle mobility brand dedicated to the “B-segment” compact market. Designed at NIO’s Munich headquarters, the Firefly aims to redefine small cars by integrating premium technology and “Smart Roominess” into a 4,003 mm hatchback. Despite its small size, it offers a combined cargo capacity of 496L (including a 92L washable frunk) and a sophisticated rear-wheel-drive setup that provides a tight 9.4m turning circle. The cabin features a high-end digital experience anchored by a 13.2-inch central display and an AI assistant named “Lumo,” alongside sustainable materials like vegan leather and recycled PET fabrics.
Hyundai Venue
The new Hyundai Venue is expected to arrive in North America in 2027, but it has already begun its career in some markets. This model has been specifically redesigned to anchor Hyundai’s presence in the highly competitive entry-level crossover segment, with features such as specialized traction control modes (Sand, Mud, Snow) and new powertrains. The Venue’s design has been updated in line with the brand’s other recent models, but it keeps the boxy proportions of the current generation, which helps it offer more interior space within a small footprint.
World Car Design of the Year
A panel of 7 global design experts have made recommendations to the jurors in order to pick the best automotive design out of all the vehicles that are eligible for the other award categories. Here are the three finalists:
Kia PV5
The Kia PV5 is a finalist for World Car Design of the Year, representing a radical shift from traditional van aesthetics toward a “Software-Defined Design” approach. It is the first production manifestation of Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, utilizing the E-GMP.S skateboard architecture to achieve a completely flat floor and a cab-forward silhouette that maximizes utility. Its design features the “Flexible Body System,” a modular assembly technology that allows the upper body to be reimagined for different business needs. The Cargo variant emphasizes a “clean and robust” exterior with a futuristic “Tiger Face” front and Star Map signature lighting, stripping away complexity to focus on a professional, high-tech aesthetic that bridges the gap between a tool and a digital device.
Mazda 6e / EZ-6
The Mazda 6e (European version of the Chinese EZ-6) represents a “Soulful Futuristic Modern” evolution of Mazda’s iconic Kodo design language. Developed to bridge the gap between traditional sedan elegance and the novelty of electric mobility, the 6e features a sleek, flowing coupe form with a long 2,895 mm wheelbase and short overhangs. Its design maintains Mazda’s signature craftsmanship while integrating smart-cabin technologies and aerodynamic refinements, such as an electric rear spoiler that optimizes stability at higher speeds.
Volvo ES90

In addition to the title of World Luxury Car, the Volvo ES90 is also in the running for the title of World Car Design of the Year. Its design is a unique “tri-blend” that merges the silhouette of a premium sedan, the versatility of a fastback, and the slightly elevated stance of an SUV. This “High-Riding” profile is a functional choice to accommodate the under-floor battery while providing the commanding road view modern drivers prefer. Like the brand’s other models, the ES90 promotes understated elegance via its Scandinavian heritage.
