Here it is : The All-New 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé

Mild hybrid technology, a big grille, more power and a stronger stance: The new 2021 BMW 4 Serie Coupé


  • It’s wider, lower, more powerful, actually good-looking.

  • M440i xDrive Coupé will be a 48V mild-hybrid 382-horsepower speed machine.

Truth be told, with the latest pictures we shared this morning, the official reveal of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is a little underwhelming. We’re still talking about the grille but honestly, we’re almost over it. What we probably won’t tire of is the M440i xDrive’s promising, power and performance.

If we must address it once more, an explanation for the new 4 Series’ kidney grille design and size is that it is a throwback to BMW’s considerably large grille openings seen back on the legendary and coveted BMW 328 from the mid- to late 1930s. This then is the modern interpretation of that. As well, BMW says that the larger openings are required for greater cooling required by the more powerful engines.

The BMW 430i xDrive Coupé will be powered by an updated TwinPower turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder good for 255-horsepower (up 7) and an impressive 294 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,550 – 4,400 rpm (a boost of 36). The 0-100km/h sprint stands at only 5.6 seconds.

The new M440i xDrive will feature the TwinPower turbocharged 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine which will deliver no less than 382-horsepower (up 62) and 369 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,800 – 5,000 rpm (an increase of 39). As is, the M440i will launch to 100km/h from a standstill in only 4.5 seconds.

An 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive intelligent AWD system are standard. The M440i’s AWD does include a rear M sport differential. Also part of the picture for the M440i is a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system that can boost performance by up to 11-horsepower under hard acceleration for a brief period of time or provide power for electronic systems when coasting under little to no engine load.

Now, although the new 4 Series looks concise, it’s actually quite a long/large coupe, much like the 8 Series Coupe. Compared to the current G20 BMW 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series Coupé is 66 mm longer, 25 mm wider, 25 mm lower, and with a 25 mm wider rear track although the wheelbase is unchanged. The dashboard and switchgear are lifted from the G20 3 Series which is to say that it is well laid-out and extremely premium-looking.

The front double-joint spring and shock and rear five-link suspension setup is said to significantly improve ride and handling over the outgoing model. The optional M adaptive suspension is likely the way to go to maximize the new car’s wider and lower stance.

As always, we can expect a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems from BMW in the new 2021 4 Series Coupé. The car also features BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant which responds to the spoken prompt “Hey BMW” or at the touch of a button. BMW’s iDrive 7 with navigation are also part of the mix with either the standard 8.8-inch or available 10.25-inch infotainment screens.

Pricing for the new 4 Series Coupé will be announced later in June in Canada however we speculate that the 430i xDrive should start just above $54,000 while the M440i xDrive will be about $65,000. The Coupé arrives in October and will be followed by a Gran Coupé and M variants. The latter will be powered by the same new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 that develops 473 horsepower, in regular, or 503-horsepower in Competition as in the new BMW X3 M.
