Honda: An Electric Vehicle Plant in Canada?

Honda may well have an electric vehicle plant in Canada, according to what was shared by Nikkei Asia, a Japanese media outlet.

  • The investment would be worth 18.4 billion.

  • The new plant would assemble electric vehicles.

  • The precise location has not yet been determined. Alliston would be one of the locations considered.

Nikkei Asia suggested that Honda would be willing to invest CAD 18.4 billion to build an electric vehicle plant in Canada. Back home, the news was reported by The Canadian Press.

The aim of such an initiative on Honda’s part would be to catch up on the automaker’s backlog in terms of transport electrification. Honda is about to launch its first 100% electric vehicle on the Canadian market, the Prologue 2024. This vehicle is based on General Motors’ Ultium technology and platform.

The location of this future factory was not specified. However, the automaker is not ruling out the possibility of building its facilities in Alliston, Ontario, near the plant that already assembles Honda Civics and CR-Vs.

Honda is expected to make its decision by the end of 2024. The facility could be operational as early as 2028.

In the USA, Honda has teamed up with LG Solution to develop an electric vehicle battery plant in Ohio.
