Versions of the beloved Honda Civic, and CR-V among others, are already built in Alliston, ON and in Greensburg, IN. This move should be easy to implement.
The Honda Civic hatchback is doing well according to Honda. Roughly 20% of all Civics sold recently have been of the 5-door variety which clearly demonstrates the once abandoned body-style has made a comeback.
Last week, Honda announced that they will shut down the Civic hatchback plant in Swindon, in the U.K. If this Honda factory is known for anything, it’s for building the highly touted Type R hatchback. There were fear that this closure would lead to, among other things, the end of the hatchback.
As for the Type R, it’s important to note that while the car is assembled in the U.K., the engine is put together in Ohio. Bringing the two together seems logical. The Swindon plant will not shut operations down until 2021 leaving Honda plenty of time to make the necessary transitions.
The current 10th generation Honda Civic landed in late 2015 as a 2016. Factor in six model-years with an upgrade in the middle and we’re in 2021 for the 11th generation. Honda did say that North American production would not start until the next-generation Civic arrives.
