Honda Confirms Next-Generation V6 Hybrid for Larger SUVs in the Next Two Years

Honda plans to introduce a next-generation V6 hybrid powertrain for its larger SUV models, a minivan too, perhaps, with product launches before the end of 2027. The coming of a larger hybrid powertrain is a direct response to rising demand for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in North America, particularly in the D-segment (midsize) and above.

The upcoming hybrid system is designed to deliver over 30% improved fuel efficiency compared to the internal combustion engine models currently available in the same segment, including the Honda Pilot and Passport. Honda also aims to improve full-throttle acceleration performance by more than 10 %. According to the company, the V6 hybrid platform will combine an upgraded engine with highly efficient drive units and next-generation energy management control. The system is being developed to offer both strong environmental performance and capabilities such as high towing capacity, aligning with customer expectations for larger utility vehicles.

It’s unclear and unlikely that this new hybrid V6 engine will share some if any components with the now discontinued Acura NSX’s turbocharged hybrid V6 powertrain.

Battery packs for the new system are being engineered with a focus on cost efficiency and emissions compliance. Honda says these updates will support improved driving performance across a variety of use conditions while meeting environmental regulations.

North America is a key market for these developments, reflecting consumer interest in fuel-efficient, high-performance SUVs. The company highlighted these plans during a recent media workshop, with some of the technology already previewed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show.

Honda has not yet confirmed which models will be the first to adopt the new V6 hybrid system. The current 5^th-generation Odyssey, which dates back to 2018, could be a good candidate. Realistically, however, the Ridgeline (last fully updated in 2017), Pilot, and Passport will be on the receiving end of the new powertrain.
