Honda Fit and Nissan LEAF Lead 2026 Rankings for Most Reliable Used Cars by Remaining Lifespan

Most cost-effective used cars for buyers, because new car prices are out of control

  • Honda Fit leads 5-year-old category with 10.9 years left.

  • Nissan LEAF tops 10-year-old list with 5.1 years left.

  • Study compares 900,000 listings and lifespan data to identify best-value used vehicles.

The Honda Fit ranks as the most reliable 5-year-old used vehicle for long-term value in 2026, according to a new study, while the Nissan LEAF tops the 10-year-old category, marking the first time an electric vehicle has led the overall rankings.

Researchers analyzed over 900,000 used vehicle sales from the second half of 2025 and odometer data from nearly 400 million vehicles to estimate remaining lifespan. Each model’s average expected longevity was then used to determine the best return in years of use for buyers seeking durable used options.

The Honda Fit was found to offer the longest remaining service life among 5-year-old vehicles. Compared to the average remaining lifespan in this category, the Fit is projected to last several years longer.

The 10-year-old Nissan LEAF ranked highest among older vehicles for reliability and longevity, though range may vary… Among all models evaluated, it offers the most remaining use per year of age, despite being a fully electric vehicle, which is a first in the history of the rankings.

“Even older used cars now cost more than they did in recent years, making reliability and remaining lifespan the two most important factors to consider when buying a used vehicle,” said an iSeeCars Executive Analyst.

Segment-Specific Leaders in Lifespan

In the 5-year-old category, Honda placed four models in the top 24, followed by Toyota with three. The longest expected remaining lifespan in this group belongs to a Lexus sedan, reflecting strong long-term durability among premium vehicles.

In the SUV segment, the Buick Encore led all 5-year-old models for remaining life relative to peers. Although other models such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are projected to last longer, they were outranked based on the ratio of age to service life.

Passenger cars like the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, and Honda Civic also performed well, offering strong remaining lifespans. The Prius ranked high among hybrid options, combining expected longevity with other ownership benefits such as fuel efficiency.

Electric and Hybrid Lifespan Leaders

Among 5-year-old electric and hybrid models, the Toyota Prius and Camry Hybrid offered the longest expected service life. The Tesla Model S also ranked high, with a projected lifespan greater than most models analyzed.
